Astronaut Pedals Across the Country

2:24 PM Mon, Aug 11, 2008 |

As the first Native American astronaut in space, John Herrington learned that with the right inspiration and education, dreams can literally come true. He spent 330 hours in orbit back in 2002, but now is planning for a much longer expedition -- a three month bicycle ride from Cape Flattery, WA to Cape Canaveral, FL.
Herrington is weighing down his bike with technology that includes a GPS, a laptop, a tiny camera and more so that his entire journey can become an educational experience for school children. He hopes everything from the distance he travels, to the calories he burns will show students that math and science have practical applications. He also is getting the side benefit of experiencing up close the planet he admired from outer space. His journey begins Wednesday.

It's always inspiring to meet people who take it upon themselves to become role models. I hope teachers and students across the country take advantage of this free lesson plan so that more young minds are inspired to soar.
