5:40pm Update

Megan Jendrick is going back to the Olympics. Jendrick finished second in the women's 100m breaststroke final a few minutes ago, beating Bremerton native Tara Kirk by just .01 seconds. Jendrick won two gold medals in Sydney eight years ago as a teenager. But, she missed the Athens games when Kirk beat her by .11 in the trials four years ago.

Jessica Hardy won the final and the other Olympic roster spot. Rebecca Soni, one of the pre-race favorites, finished fourth behind Jendrick and Kirk. The 200 meter breaststroke heats are on Thursday.

Women's 100m Backstroke

Margaret Hoelzer of King Co. Aquatic just qualified for the Olympics. Hoelzer finished second to Natalie Coughlin in the 100 meter backstroke finals. Coughlin sets a new world record and Hoelzer barely out-touched Hayley McGregory at the wall to earn the second Olympic roster spot. Hoelzer is the defendding world champion in the 200m backstroke, which comes up later this week.

Katie Hoff and Natalie Coughlin swam the fastest times - 2:12.02 for Hoff and 2:12.21 for Coughlin. Emily Kukors finished 19th, about a half second short of the time needed to make the semis. The morning session is done. Swimmers will be back in the pool at 4:45pm PT for tonight's semis and finals.

Track and field is on the first of two rest days in Eugene, Oregon. The trials resume on Thursday. So, it's just swimming from Omaha, Nebraska for the next two days.

Women's 200 Meter Freestyle

The heats were this morning and no Puget Sound swimmers advanced. Auburn's Ariana Kukors just missed making the semifinals. She swam a 2:00:.09 and finished 17th. Ariana's older sister Emily was two spots further back with a time of 2:00.40. Bainbridge Island's Emily Silver finished 44th at 2:01.89. Margaret Hoelzer, who swims for King Co. Aquatic, scratched from this event. She is swimming tonight's final in the 100 meter backstroke. Katie Hoff was the fastest qualifier this morning by more than a second, posting a time of 1:57.72.

The heats in the women's 200 meter individual medley will be coming up shortly. Ariana and Emily Kukors are both entered. Ariana has one of the top times in the event heading into the qualifying heats and this is her best shot at making the Olympic team.

The women's 100 meter breaststroke final is tonight. Tara Kirk (Bremerton) and Megan jendrick (Tacoma) both have excellent chances to finish in the top two tonight and punch their tickets for Beijing.
