Sonics are leaving: What will you remember? Bookmark and Share

3:43 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

A settlement has been reached between the Seattle SuperSonics and the City of Seattle, clearing the way for the Sonics to leave the Emerald City. The team's name and history stay here, along with the memories.
My favorite memory is Game 4 of the 1993 Western Conference Finals against the Suns. That's when KeyArena was still the Seattle Center Coliseum. Our seats were terrible - we could barely tell what was happening, but it was a blast to be there watching The Glove and The Reign Man -- and the Sonics won.
What are your favorite memories of the Sonics?

We'll remember getting a hotel room so we could go to a night game last year. We were so excited!
And we went to the most boring game ever. Even the crowd was subdued.
They're leaving?? Oh, well. The only thing we'll miss about the current Sonics is Kevin Callabro.
Now, HE was a class act!!
Bye, Guys!

All of the great players: Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Nate, Hersey, Detlef, Perkins, Ellis, Rashard, Ray... and Kevin Callabro! Thanks for the memories.

This just proves that Clay Bennett is nothing more than a thief and a liar and I really hope that Schultz takes him to the cleaners in Court

I will remember buying Vin Baker's jersey for $5 at the Sonics Key Arena Team Shop and winning a free night of bowling from a coupon dropped by the remote control indoor blimp.

Where do I even start? Memories. I'm not going to rant, I'm going to talk about memories.

My first game was at age 8. I fell madly in love with Dana Barros, who was announced as player of the month while Pump Up The Volume boomed in the background. I spent my teen years scraping together my grocery store earnings to buy the standing room only tickets at the colliseum, and if no one wanted to go with my I would hop on a bus and go alone. I would wait for hours at Boeing field after playoff games so I could slap hands with Gary and Shawn. I went to any rally I could get my hands on. I had over 100 peices of memorobilia on my wall growing up. I was a woman obsessed.

The last time the tears fell this hard was when Dikembe lay on his back clutching the game ball and laughing. I KNOW you all remember that.

NOT IN OUR HOUSE.

Literally.

I was in 4th grade when I started watching basketball and I'll never forget when I got my first basketball Jersey, Gary Payton and I still have it to this day! I won't forget the Sonic rally when Gary and Xavier came out and supported us! I love the Sonics and I am truly sad about this whole situation and that they have been taken from us. It's sad that the NBA makes such a huge deal about the venue, it's about BASKETBALL! The Key is a wonderful venue, NBA is going downhill.

Going to a preason double header Bob Rule vs Wilt. Listening to Bob Blackburn the voice of Sonics while trying to contain myself while Downtown is going off oh Philly....
Watching Clark Kellog walking on the court while our Sonics are playing some regular season games in the T-dome....Cutting out of work early to get tickets both 78 & 79 championship year games.

My biggest memory is horrendously snarled traffic on game nights.

The Mayor and the city SOLD OUT !! This is a very sad day in the history of Seattle. THE NBA WILL NEVER RETURN VOTE OUT the Mayor, The Governor and most of all FRANK CHOPP !!

Jeff said:

The Mayor nor the city sold out if anyone sold out it was Howard Schultz. However I'm happy this team is leaving if the owners can't buy there own arena then they can't afford the team period. It is about time corporate welfare went to another city. Let the fools in Oklahoma City Pay for this garbage team. And if anyone has seen the sweetheart deal the Sonics got from the Idiots in Oklahoma City you would be happy theis team was leaving as well. No way would or should the residents of Seattle should bow down to the demands the Sonics were asking for NO WAY.

Gosh about all you have to remember with the exception of one year is all those losing seasons and ONE championship. One less tax drain on the State of Washington.

I remember watching the championship parade from the steps of the library. I missed school to watch the parade. To Gary, Fred, Jack, Gus, Lennie, Nate. Thanks Guys.

One of the best memories I had were Tommy Chambers, the X-man and Dale Ellis commonly known as the big 3.
Oh do not forget Mo Lucas, the bruiser. That team was awesome and was so much fun during the playoffs.

And of course do not forget the Rain Man, Shawn Kemp. He electrified the fans for a lot of years.

Last but not least was the team of Ray, Rashard, Antonio Daniels and the other bruiser Danny Fortson.

These memories will last a life time especially, the last team that went to the playoffs. The kids enjoyed that playoff run during that year.

Here are my top 10 Sonics memories:

1. Gary Payton staring down Karl Malone as he walked off the court in Key Arena after the Sonics beat Utah to reach the playoffs in 2002

2. My dad taking me to see the Sonics-Celtics game and Larry Bird every February when Boston visited Seattle

3. Talking to Vladimir Radmanovic at the tunnel before shootaround and getting him to agree to shoot more 3 pointers in the game on behalf of my fantasy team

4. Seeing myself on the giant screen while dancing with Squatch in the aisle to "Flashlight" between the 3rd and 4th quarters

5. Feeling sad when Detlef Schrempf and Nate McMillan went south to Portland

6. Desmond Mason representing the Sonics and winning the 2001 Slam Dunk contest

7. The crazy Predrag Drobnjak TV commercials and "Manjak" website

8. Shawn Kemp's reverse slams

9. Playing one scalper off against the others in front of the Key Arena Team Shop for cheap luxury tickets whenever the Clippers came to Seattle

10. Kevin Calabro

Gary Payton to Shawn Kemp. Seeing them play the bulls w/ pippen, rodman, and mj from the suite. Seeing the fan base drop and not being approved for a new stadium after 3 years of absolute retarded draft choices.
