Saturday - Swimming & Track Trials

9:00pm Update

It's official. Emily Silver's name is now listed on the USA Swimming Olympic roster. It's been a foregone conclusion for several days that the top six finishers in the 100m and 200m freestyle finals would make it. (Silver took 5th in the 100.) But, her name wasn't added to the roster until tonight. Silver's one event is the women's 4x100 relay. The preliminary heats are on the opening Saturday night in Beijing with the final the following morning. So, Silver's Olympics will be done right out of the box.

6:00pm

Nathan Adrian and Emily Silver both came up short in the last two races for northwest swimmers at the trials. Adrian finished sixth in the final of the 50m freestyle. Garrett Weber-Gale and Ben Wildman-Tobriner took the two Olympic spots in the men's 50.

Silver finished twelfth in the semis of the women's 50. Dara Torres set a new American record and will be the top qualifier for tomorrow's final.

Four northwest swimmers will be making the trip to Beijing as part of the US team. Megan Jendrick (Tacoma) will be swimming in the 100m breaststroke. Margaret Hoelzer (King Aquatic) made the team in the 100m and 200m backstroke. Adrian (Bremerton) and Silver (Bainbridge) both made the 4x100m relay teams.

5:15pm Update

Yesterday, Margaret Hoelzer cruised through the semis of the 200m backstroke, saying she didn't want to show her hand early. Today, she set a new world record in winning the final at the Olympic trials in a time of 2:06.09. Hoelzer is from Alabama, but moved to Seattle earlier this year to train with Sean Hutchison at King Aquatic. She's the current world champion in the 200 and has now qualified for both the 100 and 200 in Beijing.

Track Update

Ginnie Powell of Rainier Beach has advanced to the semifinals of the 100m hurdles. Powell, who's been battling a hamstring problem, finished second in her qualifying heat, posting a time of 13.12, and fourth in her quarterfinal race at 12.78. The semis and finals are tomorrow, with the top three finishers making the Olympic team.

9:15am Update

Bainbridge Island HS grad Emily Silver is going to have one more chance to make an individual event at the Olympics. This morning Silver advanced to the semifinals of the 50m freestyle. She swam a 25.57, putting her 14th in the 16 swimmer field. Megan Jendrick also swam the 50 this morning, finishing 37th with a time of 26.08. The top three qualifiers for the semis are Lara Jackson (24.50, a new American record), Jessica Hardy (24.63), and 41 year old Dara Torres (24.72).

Although she has not been formally named yet, Silver is definitely on the Olympic team. Even if there were upset first and second place finishes in all three of the remaining women's events, Silver's fifth place finish in the 100m freestyle would get her on the roster.

Hi,

I stumbled on your blog through google and am very excited when I’m reading your Olympic coverage.

I’m actually an intern at NowPublic.com, a citizens journalism site. We strive to be more than just another traditional news media network, and hope to redefine the news network, turning it into firsthand accounts from individuals at the scene, not from traditional media sources.

Right now we’re building an Olympics channel, and we’re wondering if you would like to participate in this exciting project. You can get back to me through my e-mail.

Thank you for your time! Have a great day!
