Day Two: The Neighborhood

3:28 AM Tue, Jul 22, 2008 |

We're getting a feel for the neighborhood near our workspace and hotel. Like I've mentioned, the people are very friendly and Beijing is feeling quite cosmopolitan. Here are a few of the tidbits and sights around us.

20080720_img_0459-hotel.jpgHere's a shot of our hotel, just to the right is the convention center we're working out of. We have a gorgeous park just outside the hotel.

20080720_img_0460-parkview.jpgNot a bad view from my room which I'll never be in (Olympic work days tend to be 12-16 hours long).

20080720_img_0463-crowneplaza.jpg Next door is the Crowne Plaza hotel where another large contingent of NBC folks are staying.

20080721_img_0468-weirdbldg.jpgThe modern architecture here is as amazing as the deep history. Many interesting buildings to see just in our area.

20080720_img_0457-street scene.jpgThe streets have not been clogged as we all expected. Sure they are traffic jams on some of the major ring roads, but this is a typical thoroughfare near us. Notice how clear the air is!

20080720_img_0458-prettyshops.jpgShopping Malls aren't what we are used to. Here's the "Pretty Shopping Center", floors upon floors of shops - I believe there's a Starbucks in there somewhere. I'm going on that discovery mission tomorrow (I'm sure it'll be an adventure and blog event of the day).

Just south of our workspace and hotel is another area of Olympic venues, these are south of the main Olympic Green area (which has the Birds Nest Stadium, Cube/swmming & Gymnastics venue). The area in this picture has the Olympics Sports Center gymnasium, Olympic Sports Center Stadium and Ying Tung Natorium.

We're headed down into central Beijing tonight. I'll get a bit broader view of the city and share with you tomorrow.
