An amazing amount of work has been done in preparation for the games here in Beijing, and the work continues. Here at the NBC News workspace things an amazing amount of work is being done by the advance crew including dozens of engineers & advance production staff from network news, the Today Show and affiliate services. Let me give you a little tour in pictures.

20080722_img_0483-bicc front.jpgWe're located in the Beijing International Convention Center, just a stone's throw from the Birds Nets stadium. Big faciilty, NBC News has several of the halls to hold each division plus the tech center and a "warehouse", dubbed the Forbidden City where we store all the unloaded cases and containers.

20080721_img_0467-suplatform.jpgThe roof of the convention center (see the upper left part of the picture above) holds a huge platform that was specially built by NBC News for all the live reports that happen - many simultaneously for the network and affiliates around the U.S. It's quite impressive.

OLY08_sitesurvey-roof.jpgFor comparision, take a look at what the roof looked like just a few months ago during a site survey to scope out the digs.

20080722_img_0488-workspace.jpgInside is already bustling, even though most staff hasn't arrived yet. Here's a view inside the space we'll be working in, the NBC News Channel (affiliates) area. That ton of gear we shipped for just the KING part arrived safe and sound and is just a tiny part of a huge amount of equipment and electronics here - just for NBC News.

20080721_img_0477-nbctech3.jpgElectronics... a lot here at the tech center for NBC News, two large areas - racks of equipment. Routers, intercom, video ingest and quality control.

20080721_img_0476-nbctech2.jpgIt's the core of the operation everything from our internet and computer access to what's headed back to the U.S. for NBC News goes through here. Remember, this isn't NBC Sports/Olympics here, just the news division- there's an operation tenfold the size for the live coverage of the Olympics events that's based out of the International Broadcast Center.

20080722_img_0494nbcnewsrm.jpgEvery area here has been given a name related to various parts of the city of Beijing by the NBC folks who first arrived for setup. I already mentioned the engineering shop & warehouse are called "The Forbidden City", the affiliates area is "Friendship Store" (used to be one of the few places foreigners could buy things).

20080722_img_0495-todayworkspace1.jpg The Today Show area has been dubbed "Summer Palace". This is the sign above their doorway.

And, the most ominous name... the catering area (which doesn't open for a couple of weeks) is named the "Beijing Zoo". Hmmmm, I can't wait to see what they are planning to serve.
