Riding With SPD's Gang Unit

12:50 PM Tue, Jul 29, 2008 |

When I arranged to spend two weekends riding with the Seattle Police Gang Unit, I expected we would respond to shootings and patrol trouble spots where gang violence has been prevalent. But watching the detectives work gives me a new appreciation for the concept of "proactive policing."
When Detectives Shandy Cobane and Bobby Sevaaetasi stop into a Seattle park known as a hangout for the Deuce 8's - a faction of the Black Gangster Disc...

Witnesses to plane crash wanted to help

7:11 PM Thu, Jul 24, 2008 |

It's so rare to see a seaplane land on Lake Nahwatzel, John Acocks had to take a picture of it. He didn't know seconds later it would be in flames.
The two people on board died upon impact. The subsequent explosion triggered a wildfire.
John and his wife, Carol have a summer home along the lake west of Shelton. They watched the two people on board standing on the plane's pontoons moments before taking off. He thought about offering...

M's create "No-Peanut Zone"

5:32 PM Wed, Jul 23, 2008 |

It sounds strange at first, but yes, the Mariners created a "No-Peanut" zone for two games later this year.
Why you ask? They must make thousands of bucks a game on Peanuts.
It's simpler than you think.
Mike San Soucie, a lifelong baseball fan, passionately and politely, asked.
See, his 4-year-old son, Nathan, has a severe, life-threatening peanut allergy and, frankly, peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jacks are hard to avoi...

Venturing Out

9:03 AM Wed, Jul 23, 2008 |

Day 3 brought a couple of excursions away from our neighborhood & workspace. One was a trip over to the IBC and MPC - the International Broadcast Center and the Main Press Center. These are BIG buildings that hold the core of the activity for broadcasters, print media and all sorts of journalists from all over the world. The other trip was a visit to Houhai area for dinner last night.

Day Two: The Neighborhood

3:28 AM Tue, Jul 22, 2008 |

We're getting a feel for the neighborhood near our workspace and hotel. Like I've mentioned, the people are very friendly and Beijing is feeling quite cosmopolitan. Here are a few of the tidbits and sights around us.

Haze... or not

4:26 PM Mon, Jul 21, 2008 |

There was a lot to soak in on day 1 here in Beijing. The people are very friendly and helpful. The city is stunning - when it's not hazy. But just like Beijing itself has rapdily changed and modernized, even the air has changed... in just 36 hours.

Arrival in Beijing

8:51 AM Sun, Jul 20, 2008 |

I'm on the ground in Beijing after a smooth, but long flight. First impressions of Beijing, BIG and new airport. Efficient and, of course, business-like immigration & customs process. Lots of Olympic hospitality folks throughout the airport. Good signs. NBC transportation super-organized as usual & got me swiftly to my hotel, my home for nearly 6 weeks. Long flights sure make one think of interesting things...

Beijing Countdown - Time to Fly

8:36 PM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 |

The Road to Beijing is looking very short as our coverage from China of the XXIX Olympiad starts this weekend, a full three weeks before the Opening Ceremonies. Can you hear the trumpets? Can you feel that Olympic spirit? In just 20 hours I'll be flying my way to Beijing, the advance person of our team.

City still refusing to release McIver arrest video

2:49 PM Wed, Jul 16, 2008 |

Once again, the City of Seattle is refusing to release a video that recorded the arrest of a current city councilmember. In one month, the City of Seattle has given KING5 News no less than four different explanations why it will not release the video. The reasons range from privacy concerns to the video was nowhere to be found.

Media day musings

1:47 PM Sat, Jul 12, 2008 |

These are always mildly irritating and mildly amusing days for us. Mix dozens of athletes with dozens of newspaper, radio, internet and television reporters, photographers and field producers, throw in a handful of coaches who actually want to get some serious training in and a gaggle of well-meaning, helpful and often overwhelmed USA Swimming public relations types and you have all the makings of a magnificent public scrum. >> Continue reading: Media day musings

Victim of hit-and-run needs help

4:59 PM Fri, Jul 11, 2008 |

For years Celia Gorski helped others as a registered nurse. Now, friends say, it's Celia that needs the help.
We featured the Lacey mother in a story last month. She was seriously injured when a hit and run driver slammed into her car in Olympia. The driver who caused the crash sped off, but left behind a piece of his bumper. That evidence and the subsequent news coverage helped Washington State Patrol detectives identify and arrest a su...

Miss WA teaches self, others lesson

6:46 PM Wed, Jul 09, 2008 |

"If something's on the World Wide Web, the world can see it!"
That's something an FBI agent told me during an interview a long time ago, and people are still learning that lesson the hard way.
Take, for example, 24-year-old Elyse Umemoto.
Pictures of her acting like lots of women in their twenties have her in hot water because she's also Miss Washington 2007. And they were on the very popular TMZ.com.
The photos were ta...

Artist's Point

5:33 PM Wed, Jul 09, 2008 |

WSDOT has something pretty cool they've done connected with the opening of Artist's Point. They have attached a GPS device to the snow blower that's clearing the way. You can keep updated on the crew's progress by visiting:

NBA intervenes in Schultz suit - Really?

11:54 AM Wed, Jul 09, 2008 |

In homage to Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update - Click here to see what I'm referring to - I have some thoughts about the NBA's decision to intervene in the Howard Schultz lawsuit to rescind the 2006 sale of the Sonics to Clay Bennett.
Really!?!
The NBA says it's intervening because the lawsuit i...

Kaye Baxter -- A Life Well Lived

5:05 PM Tue, Jul 08, 2008 |

Kaye Baxter gave more than she ever really knew to Western Washington. She began by taking a handful of baby owls, displaced by a demolition project, into her Everett home. Nearly 30 years and an estimated 40,000 animals later, Baxter leaves behind a legacy that will live on, but the question is: For how long?

9:00pm Update

It's official. Emily Silver's name is now listed on the USA Swimming Olympic roster. It's been a foregone conclusion for several days that the top six finishers in the 100m and 200m freestyle finals would make it. (Silver took 5th in the 100.) But, her name wasn't added to the roster until tonight. Silver's one event is the women's 4x100 relay. The preliminary heats are on the opening Saturday night in...

Fish Farm Breakout

4:56 PM Fri, Jul 04, 2008 |

Today, Canadian officials announced the escape of 30,000 salmon from a fish farm in British Columbia. Large escapes like this one set off a wave of concern among fish farming opponants and wildlife biologists.
The sudden influx of non-native, Atlantic salmon can compete with the local salmon species for food. They can also prey on young salmon entering the ocean from Northwest rivers.
Fish Farm groups argue these escapes are rare a...

6:15pm Update

It looks like Emily Silver of Bainbridge Island is in, although we are not absolutely sure. Silver finished fifth in the 100m freestyle final. The top four are guaranteed spots on the 4x100m relay team. The fifth and sixth place finishers get to go, depending on how many other swimmers have qualified in other events. The US can only bring a total of 26 women swimmers. But, after the race, the NBC announ...

Sonics - What the city will be missing

6:08 PM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

I've often heard the argument.

People have told me "No one cares about the Sonics" or "We shouldn't subsidize Professional Sports Teams."
Other people will constantly debate from this day forward whether the city should have settled the lawsuit.

I won't debate the merits of those claims, but I'll ask you this.

Would you care if Benaroya Hall suddenly went dark?
What if McCaw Hall saw it's major tenant go awa...

What to name Oklahoma City's new team

10:58 AM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

While Sonics fans try to live with the consolation that the team's name will stay in Seattle, fans in Oklahoma City are wondering what their new NBA team will be called. We're inviting you to come up with a name for the new OKC franchise. Feel free to be creative, but please, keep it clean. Read our content submission rules

Track & Field

2004 Olympians Jarred Rome and ian Waltz easily advanced to Saturday's final in discus. Rome, who hails from Marysville, was the top qualifier with a throw of 206-10. Waltz, the former Cougar, made one throw of 204-03 and passed on the rest of his turns. That was good enough to place him third in the opening round. Reedus Thurmond, the UW coach who's married to three time Olympian Aretha Thurmond, finish...

Sonics are leaving: What will you remember?

3:43 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

A settlement has been reached between the Seattle SuperSonics and the City of Seattle, clearing the way for the Sonics to leave the Emerald City. The team's name and history stay here, along with the memories.
My favorite memory is Game 4 of the 1993 Western Conference Finals against the Suns. That's when KeyArena was still the Seattle Center Coliseum. Our seats were terrible - we could barely tell what was happening, but it was a blast ...

7:30pm Update

Winning the swim-off for 9th place has landed Nathan Adrian in tomorrow's 100m freestyle final. Ryan Lochte, one of the eight qualifiers, withdrew this evening, opening up a spot for Adrian. The top four finishers (and maybe the fifth and sixth place finishers as well) will make the Beijing Olympic team.

5:40pm Update

Megan Jendrick is going back to the Olympics. Jendrick finished second in the women's 100m breaststroke final a few minutes ago, beating Bremerton native Tara Kirk by just .01 seconds. Jendrick won two gold medals in Sydney eight years ago as a teenager. But, she missed the Athens games when Kirk beat her by .11 in the trials four years ago.

Jessica Hardy won the final and the other Olympi...
