Rotten Neighbors

5:32 PM Mon, Jun 30, 2008 |

It's no fun having a crummy neighbor.
My wife and I fell in love with a home in the Desert Southwest several years ago. It was everything we wanted but for one thing... our rotten neighbor.
His house was in such a state of disrepair I was reluctant to walk on the east side of my home. I feared the neighbor's rusty swamp cooler would fall off its second floor perch and kill me. Then there were the four foot weeds, the storm drain in...

Pole vault world champion Brad Walker made his first Olympic team with a vault of 18' 6.5". That put him third in the competition, which is all he needed to lock up a spot. Diana Pickler's Post Race Comments

I was pretty overwhelmed after javelin because it has not been my forte to race the 800 to beat someone out. I knew I was capable of it. My coach knew I was capable of it. He was really calm. He was like, 'I know you can do it'. It took me a little bit to convince myself but I just stuck on her like glue and knew I could as the race went on.

She put it on at 300 to go. I k...

Sonics Trial - Pechman Expresses Concern

1:17 PM Thu, Jun 26, 2008 |

Closing Arguments have begun, and Paul Lawrence is trying to make the claim that the Sonics are unique and unlike other businesses.
However, during his argument, he's been interrupted several times by Judge Marsha Pechman. At one point, she wondered what type of guarantee Lawrence could give that both sides won't end up back in court, or try to undermine each other over the course of the next two years.

Sonics Trial - Licata done

9:11 AM Thu, Jun 26, 2008 |

The PBC did what all expected, and nailed Licata on a remark he made to Sports Illustrated in 2006 about the Sonics having zero cultural impact if they left town.

Licata called it a "flippant, off the cuff" and tried to explain that his answer was due in part to the fact he had recently read a study on the impact of the the Arts community in Seattle, and that's why "I didn't think it would be that big of plunk."

Sonics Trial - My thoughts on day five

10:16 AM Sat, Jun 21, 2008 |

Sorry, I'm a little late to getting to this, but I was slammed with post hearing coverage.

I must say, I agree with much of the analysis, and will repeat what I said on KJR last night - the Sonics had a "significant" day in the courtroom.

Say what you want about Clay Bennett, but he hired some superb attorneys. Brad Keller and Paul Taylor have done a pretty good job, and I think they have been organized, direct ...

10:27 PM Thu, Jun 19, 2008 |

Sonics Trial - City ends day on a whimper

4:10 PM Thu, Jun 19, 2008 |

After a relatively good day for the city, with positive testimony from Sherman Alexie and an organized cross examination by the city's Paul Lawrence, the city had a rough close to this fourth day of testimony.

The city's co-counsel, Jeffrey Johnson, tried to cross examine the Sonics witness, and analyst named Debra Jay.

He stumbled through the cross examination, to the point Jay seemed like she was getting annoy...

I'll take some fries with that scholarship ...

4:07 PM Thu, Jun 19, 2008 |

All too often, the news we cover has a sad or troubling element to it - soaring food and gas prices, people committing crimes, our polluted planet, you name it. The story I did today though about Dick's Drive-In offering college scholarship money to its employees is one of the fun ones. (Watch the video report here.)

They offer their workers up to $15,000 in college sc...

Sonics Trial - City's attorney picks apart Sonics analyst

2:02 PM Thu, Jun 19, 2008 |

Paul Lawrence, attorney for the City, had his strongest moment in this trial.

He systematically picked apart one of the Sonics economic analysts on cross-examination.

Brad Humphreys was the first witness called by the city to outline his study on the impact of the Sonics leaving town. He argued cities are hurt, because spending on franchises is redistributed and the departure here will have "no detectable impact."

Sonics trial - what's the score?

5:27 PM Wed, Jun 18, 2008 |

It's halftime of the Seattle vs. Sonics trial, and the score is...
Who knows?
Handicapping this lawsuit is kind of like trying to ask a James Bond fan, "Who is the better 007 - Sean Connery or Daniel Craig?" It all depends on who you ask. In the case of the Sonics trial, it's all dependent on what Judge Marsha Pechman is focusing on.

Sonics Trial - Trial of the New Millenium?

Forget the trial of the century, at least for Seattle, but maybe we can call this the Trial of the New Millenium.

This is the first time I can remember covering a federal case, like this one.
There are a number of different news agencies covering this trial, and updating it live online. I can't remember a state or federal case like it.

Our KING5.com producer, Travis Pittman, is doing a fabulous job covering it. He's doi...

Green industry rising

5:14 PM Thu, Jun 05, 2008 |

I have recently done several stories on new technology and products emerging in the energy sectors. These are responses to rising fuel prices and uncertainty over how we'll power our world in the future.
This week we looked at AFS Trinity, a Bellevue company that developed a plug-in hybrid system it claims can produce mileage in excess of 150 miles per gallon.
These are reputable scientists who have put together a product many top ...
