What if Geraldine Ferraro's comments were reversed?

1:20 PM Thu, Mar 13, 2008 |

By now, most of you have heard the latest backlash from the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination. Former vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro quit her post with the Hillary Clinton campaign on Wednesday after she gave a speech in which she said the following in regards to Barack Obama:
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

This, of course, had people coming out saying the comment was racially insensitive. However, note that Ferraro also used the gender reference, thus eliminating a role-reversal on Clinton.
Clinton has said she doesn't agree with Ferraro's comments and Ferraro stepped down from the Clinton campaign.
This got me to thinking. Let's say, hypothetically, someone who supports Obama made the following statement about Clinton.
"If Hillary Clinton wasn't married to a popular former president, she would not be in this position. She happens to be very lucky to be married to who she is married to."
I'm very curious to hear what you think about this. If Hillary wasn't married to Bill Clinton, would she be doing as well as she is now? Was Ferraro wrong in her observation about Obama? Or, is her opinion correct, but she shouldn't have said it because it's not politically correct?
Thoughts?

Quite frankly,I agree with what Geraldine Ferraro said. Plain and simple, SHE SPOKE THE TRUTH. She said what she meant and meant what she said and does not have to justify it to anyone especially the media or to Obama. Ferraro/Clinton 2012

Of course it is partly true. Just look at the polls with the 85%+ majority of Black voting for Obama. Do they think he is the best person for the job or just because he is black. Are all the other people voting wrong? All the other (gender, whites, age) polls are fairly evenly distributed. Yes more older women for Clinton but not over the top numbers. The point about her husband is right on. Race, who your married to, and gender is obviously a factor. Racism is not a one way road in America and Ferraro is not a racist. Just look at the voting polls, whites for the most part are not racist either. They are voting evenly. But now look at the black vote???? We should not vote on race, gender, or age. I'm tired of hearing McCain is too old (age discrimination) . Vote for the best person for the job- people.

If Ferraro's comments were reversed... like, played backwards?

I think for the first time African Americans feel like they can finally vote for a person they believe is finally qualified to respresent them and this diverse country. In the past, with the so called qualified and of couse entitled white candidates, African Americans had NO CHOICE but to vote the lesser of several evils. As for Ferraro's comment, one could say that she moved up the political ladder only by using sex and gender to manipulate key men into providing her with jobs. Since Ferraro was never qualified to run as Vice President in the past I guess she did what was necessary to claw her way up to that glass ceiling. Not to exclude Hillary Clinton, lets just say she got the job because she is married to a former President. She is there because she has a white man backing her.

Funny,
When blacks bring up the issue of race they are playing the "race card". When a white person brings it up, it's suddenly the "truth". Obama is a very charismatic person...he got where he is because of that (just like Bill Clinton did).

Just because Billary, I'm sorry, Hillary, just because Hillary was in the white house with her husband, that makes her NO MORE qualified to run the country than Obama. It's disgusting that she would rather claw and fight her way to the presidency and risk destroying the democratic party because she wants her oompah loopah and she wants it now, than to swallow her pride and step aside.

Her marriage is a SHAM and everyone knows it. She can't control her marriage, but she wants to control the country...yeah, THAT's the candidate I want running our country! NOT!

After reviewing the Trinity United Church of Christ web site, I can no longer support the Obama campaign. I was shocked and very disappointed to see so many references requiring it’s members to be committed to Africa, Black Liberation Theology and the Black Value System. Even one of Dr. Wright’s ‘talking points’, item #7, states that one’s thoughts should be African-centered. At the same time I saw nothing positive about America implied or otherwise. In fact I was offended by many of the implied comments about America.

At first I was excited about Barack and what he had to say. Now, seeing that Barack is still committed to Trinity United Church of Christ and its teachings, I cannot and will not vote for him. Its fine to be African American, but my president must put America first and be American-centered in his thinking, not African-centered or any other country for that matter.
