Sorrow over child buried in a sandbox Bookmark and Share

4:21 PM Mon, Mar 10, 2008 |

There are some stories we cover that simply hold no joy for the reporter assigned to the task. The story of the 10 year old Everett boy who was buried head down in a sandbox is definitely one of those. Not only did a child who's been repeatedly described as bright and imaginative end up in critical condition after being buried by his playmates (many of them young relatives of his) but it's hard to pin down the exact lesson learned.

Certainly parents (myself included) want to warn their children of dangers in the world around them, but how can a parent cover everything? Certainly you can attempt to teach a child about the dangers of fire, water, internet stalkers, electrical outlets, food allergies, and countless other evils... but how could this boy's family even guess he might want to emulate a cartoon character who uses sand as a sort of super-power?

It's impossible not to feel awful for little Codey Porter and his family. All I can do is hope that in a few days, weeks, or even months, I'll be able to report about a miraculous recovery.
