Does RateMyCop.com go too far?

10:51 PM Sun, Mar 09, 2008 |

It's a website that allows citizens to rate specific police officers on things like "authority" and "fairness." It also lets them post a comment about the officer. We found a range of postings from "Great officer," to "He uses brute force on people & lies & manipulates paperwork."

There were other postings that clearly had nothing to do with job performance, i.e. "This officer is so hot." "Good to know, good to know." Some officers are upset that the website allows people to malign them without any opportunity to defend themselves. The website creators describe it as a good tool. What do you think?

I like it, and I'm surprised that a web site like this hasn't popped up before now. Sure, its going to get some posters that just have an axe to grind because they got a speeding ticket. A job as a cop is a respected and very visible form of employment but if the information is assimilated properly it may weed out some problems. The observation that the police won't have an opportunity to defend themselves is a foolish one. You can use the same website to accomplish that. Besides, even in a courtroom setting, the judge or court commissioner is on the side of the police report before you even get a chance to open your mouth to defend YOURself. Guilty until proven innocent.

I believe this site is at its root, a good idea. No one, not even the police are above reproach, and we all must stand in the light of our peers. The men and women of law enforcement face risk everyday, they do have a job that most of us are not willing to perform and it takes a special ilk, but in those positions comes a certain level of power and people of power need to be stood in the spot light, it keeps the honest person honest and the unethical under watch.

As long as these officers don’t have to worry about sensitive information getting published by some cop hating wanker, i.e information about home addresses, spouses and children, then this site can be a good resource. I am concerned that the owners of this website have stated that they won’t edit the site and may mean they won’t police it and that means no one is making sure dangerous information is not being published. It is then, that this site is no longer a benefit. I sent an email to the website asking if this is what it meant and received no answer so far.

I hope they do the right thing and allow this site to be a great resource for everyone, including the police.

This is no different than rate my prof. I say let the real actions and accusation be let out. Actions will prove what right and whats false. I don't see the harm, maybe someone will think next time they do something that will end up online for the world to see.

"Some officers are upset that the website allows people to malign the without any opportunity to defend themselves." This is equally fair to those individuals who were arrested with or without cause and put in jail for nothing. Some have to be in debt to bail them out. If cops put citizens in jail for no cause or by error, they should be fined for their false actions!

Here is an example for your evaluation: I have had my driver's license for 30 years. I neither have any accident of my fault nor any traffice violation ticket. I had travelled from my city to this other city for a year in Dec. 2007 without any problem. In December 2007, I reported a road rage that happened to me to a local highway patrol office. Interestingly, between December 2007 and March 2008, I have been pauled over for nothing twice at the same street vicinity and time frame. In my view, informant or victim of crime became the victim the second time, not the perpetrator.

Good to see that someone may actually be starting a trend toward holding cops accountable for their actions. It's a shame that it took this long for that to start happening.

When police are the only people policing the police, there might as well be NO police.

Remember- Cops are OUR employees. They need to start acting like it.

Wow, all of a sudden, access to the site is restricted. I wonder if it has anything to do with government pressure. The first amendment was written specifically so citizens could responsibly comment on government its very sad to think that our government has outgrown what made it so great, the Constitution.
