At least one Oklahoma City TV news Web site isn't waiting for the NBA or a judge to decide if the Sonics can move there. It's already claiming the green and gold as one of its local teams. KING 5 Sports producer Tony White says it's been up there for some time, and that there's another Oklahoma City website doing the same thing. This comes after the revelation that the recently upgraded official Sonics Web site is conspicuously missing the word Seattle. 19 Comments |
Can anyone say Ken Behring? We've been through this before...
Buh Bye
Let OKC deal with a bunch of demanding, overpaid whiners.
And take the Seahawks with you, Kthanks.
OK D...what about the mariners?
Them too....
Sonics...PLEASE LEAVE...you will not be missed. We do not need another overpaid, under-skilled sports team in this town, nor should the taxpayers be forced to pay any percentage of money for another sports venue! Stop with the idle threats and get packin'!
I agree with the comment above. The Sonics are not a good team. And furhermore, why should tax payers pay for a new stadium in Renton of all places? They are a Seattle team and should remain in Seattle.
Perhaps the City of Seattle should just turn off the lights at 5:00 p.m. every night. Think of the energy and money that could be saved if all events were cancelled by The Seattle Symphony, The Pacific NW Ballet, The Seattle Aquarium, Key Arena with it's concerts by overpaid rock stars, and the myriad of other organizations and venues that receive public funding or otherwise benefit from public facilities and/or services. The City could lay off all of their employees who track sales tax revenues, and those employees could compete with the rest of the private-sector employees who will lose their jobs as a result of these actions. Get your heads out of the sand Seattle and support all of your community assets !!!
To gj:
Wow...Comparing the Seattle Symphony and the Pacific NW Ballet to the Sonics and Key Arena is quite a stretch. By not wanting the Sonics here in Seattle does not mean that we are devoid of culture...actually quite the contrary.
The Sonics are not a community asset. They want the arena to be remodeled so that their lockers are bigger, and they have more plush surroundings. If they had recently proven to be a viable contender in the NBA...maybe I'd support the upgrades. But to keep them around and pay for the arena just for the sake of having the NBA in Seattle...so not worth it.
The money that the taxpayers would have to pay is ridiculous when we have so many other truly PUBLIC projects are in need of financial support.
Take a look at yourself and see where you've buried your head...might catch you by surprise!
I've seen so many comments on different blogs where people say "they're not a good team, let them go". The posts here by 'John' and 'Someone' seem to mirror that.
If we said that about the Seahawks in the early 90's, we wouldn't have lived that wonderful Super Bowl run two years ago. If we had said that about the Mariners for all those years, then the 1995 Refuse to Lose season and the 116 wins in 2001 would have been another city's memory to cherish.
If you don't like the NBA and want them to leave, that's fine. If you don't like basketball period and want them to leave, that's fine. If you don't want to pay a penny to allow the super-rich to get super-richer and want them to leave, that's fine. But don't use the excuse that the Sonics are bad as a reason to get rid of them. One day, they will be good again and maybe celebrating a championship -- Seattle's championship -- in Oklahoma.
And just so you know I am not biased, I am one of those who doesn't care about the NBA and doesn't go to Sonics games, so I will not feel bad one way or the other if the Sonics go.
Anyone who wants the Sonics to leave didn't experience 1996. Anyone who wants them to leave are NOT Sonics fans. Yes, they are overpaid. Yes the rich will get richer, but man, thats just the way it is. You still use Microsoft products don't you? You still by music don't you? Don't give the excuse that they will just get richer when everything you buy eventually makes someone rich get richer. If you don't care that the Sonics might leave just shows you're not a fan. There's just something about cheering for "your" team, whether its high school, college or pro. And there's a cost to it. I wish more of the real fans would speak up about this. There were 17,000 fans sitting in the arena in 1996 and thousands more screaming at the TV at home... where is everyone??
Go to the OKC TV sation link and give them a polite piece of your mind
I think those of us who don't want the Seattle Sonics to leave should click on "contact us" on the website and start writing our comments directly to their media relations department. I hope some who realize that when the SEATTLE Sonics move to OK they are not just taking a group of overpaid, selfsh and whiney millionaires, they are also taking 100s of careers and jobs out of our community. It is the loss of jobs in our region that should concern people as well. Let's not forget when Boeing moved it HQ to Chicago, people out here lost their jobs...what if the M's or the Hawks left? This is not just about the team itself. There are more than those jobs which are "visible" jobs, what about the people who work around the Key or those in the community like in Social Services program who rely on donations and serives directly from this "business" known as "Seattle Super Sonics." I am sad that it has come down this way and I think both sides should feel shame in their role in this.
Hey Sonics.....
Get the F**K Out and Don't let the door hit you on the way out !!!
We Don't Need You or your Once in a Decade Playoff Apperances.
We also Don't need to be bullied into paying for a venue that is already structurally sound, capacity capable, yet these millionaires only want more money from the general public to boost their ego's and impress their influential friends.
When are people going to learn that Big Business has only one interest in mind.
And We the people are NOT IT !!!!
Goodbye you sissified, overpaid, untalented Thugs !!!
You belong in a city of folks who obviously cant think for themselves !!!!
Plz report figures correctly. Your reporter on the 11:00 news tonight reported that half of the $300 million dolllars for the renovation of Key Arena would have to come from the tax payers.
WRONG! The correct figure is 1/4 of the amount or $75 million from the hotel/rental car and resturant tax. This new proposal where private parties are offering to pay 150 million of the cost is without peer
All we need now are serious errors from the news services.
There are not new taxes proposed. The current tax mentioned above is scheduled to run until 2015. The bonds for Safco and Qwest field are due to be paid off by that tax around 2012. The Key area portion from the tax would not even take until 2015. So plz get it correct.
Thank you
Again, stop calling the Sonics "our team". They're not. Its their business. Let it go Seattle. The Governor gave her "its not over till its over" comment yesterday about where the team is going. Give it up. Its going.
Lets see if we can go at least a year or two without being suckers to the sports junkies pocketbooks.
buh buh, and don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.
It was all a lie, before the ink dried on the check to buy them. OKC not only gets the whiney-butt players, but the whiney butt owners who kick and scream if they don't get what they want. Good ridance!
So, what's the problem? It is their team, we knew that from the moment we saw Traitor Howard S. shaking Clay B's hand the day the Sonics were sold (down the tube). Look at it this way, OKC will be getting a bad, very bad team, and they'll be bad for years to come. The novelty will wear off in OKC in a couple of years & they'll be giving away tickets to put butts in the seats just like they're doing in The Big Easy.
Can you say "Vancouver Grizzlies"?
Look at that not so Super Sonics record. Get that rent paid up and get out of town Oklahoma City can have you the sooner the better.
