Police guard / honor their own

"This was not an accident."
That’s what the family of Grant County Deputy Earl Romig wants everyone to know.
While on a hunting trip near Soap Lake on January 10, 2008, Romig was shot in the back. The 30-06 bullet nicked his spine, bruised his innards and exited out his abdomen.
Doctors say he’ll be able to go back to work after a lot of therapy, but will have to wear a foot brace the rest of his life.
Prosecutors have charged a felon, 38-year old Robbie Joe Marcher of Moses Lake, with assault, illegal weapons possession and failing to aid a person in distress. Due to the nature of the crime and its target, uniformed police officers have been volunteering their time to guard Romig’s hospital room since he arrived at Harborview. They include members of the Seattle Police Department, Port of Seattle Police, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, King County Sheriff’s Office, Ephrata Police and the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

Why is he only being charged with assault, instead of attempted murder? Shot in the back with a 30.06? What is the motive/story behind this shooting, if not accidental?

Absolutely ! Even if he did
not know the guy was a policeman it should be attempted murder and anything else they can find to add to it. I am so tired of Prosecutors that are too
wimpy to stand their ground.
Afraid of violating the criminals (oh excuse me alleged criminals) rights ! What about the victims rights.
