A building remains in Ballard (for now)

4:36 PM Thu, Feb 21, 2008 |

The former Denny's restaurant on the corner of 15th and NW Market in Ballard is considered an eyesore by some, but stirs fond memories for others. Last night, the dilapidated building was granted landmark status in Seattle, thereby hampering efforts of its new owners and developers to convert the property to condos. Many Ballardites fought hard to save this building... whether due to nostalgia or to fight back against more condos (which are what the owners have in store for the site) or perhaps because they really do love the unique "Googie" style of architecture.
The owners paid $12.5 million for this property a few years ago with development in mind. Is this building truly worth saving? If so, in what form, and by who? Who should foot the bill? All questions people will need to think through as more buildings in Seattle age, and the land beneath them becomes more valuable.
