February 2008You've heard of road rage. Here's a case of cell phone rage ... While riding a Metro Bus through the downtown bus tunnel Wednesday, an 18-year-old Seattle woman was talking on her cell phone. According to the Seattle Police report, a man told her to get off the phone. The woman said she didn't have to. You may not be able to make the US Olympic Team, but you can train like you are. The March issue of Seattle Metropolitan Magazine has a section on 50 ways to stay fit doing activities around Puget Sound. Within the article, five local Olympic hopefuls - some of whom have already won medals - give their secrets to training and staying in shape. ...The Mayor's Century 21 Committee just released a comprehensive recommendation for Seattle Center's redevelopment. It comes after more than a year of work. The plan, officially called, Alternative 4R-B, is no doubt ambitious. ...Photojournalist Natalie Fobes of West Seattle arrived on the scene of the Exxon Valdez spill and proved herself to be better prepared and positioned than most her colleagues. Seattle City Light warned customers last year to beware of con artists who call posing as utility bill collectors only to scam people of their money. Sadly, we cover stories where a wife, a girlfriend, a child is killed by a loved one in a rage of domestic violence. I once had them replaced in my clunky car in college. I sometimes have problems with them in the winter. Eva Schloss' stepsister is one of the most widely published authors in the world. But Schloss, herself a writer, would never want to trade places with her. That's because the stepsister in question is Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who died in the Holocaust... years before her diary was ever published. Washington consumers are forced to make some tough choices now that gasoline prices jumped 31 cents a gallon in the LAST MONTH. Dr. Clement Furlong's research at the University of Washington could answer some long-standing questions, and raise some new ones. Did you watch the Oscars last night? Many of you have probably housesat for a friend, a co-worker, a relative or at least have been asked to do so. Folks on Pierce County's Anderson Island appear to want it both ways. Some are complaining because they want an increased police presence when teenagers are breaking into their cars or vandalizing public property. The former Denny's restaurant on the corner of 15th and NW Market in Ballard is considered an eyesore by some, but stirs fond memories for others. Last night, the dilapidated building was granted landmark status in Seattle, thereby hampering efforts of its new owners and developers to convert the property to condos. Many Ballardites fought hard to save this building... whether due to nostalgia or to fight back against more condos (which are wh... Seattle sushi eaters, rejoice. In our story about a 15-year-old developmentally disabled teenager who was financially, emotionally and sexually exploited by peers at her school, we showed how her counselor from a community counseling center helped the girl obtain a Depo Provera shot. That's a hormone injection that serves as birth control. Her mother knew nothing about... Hmmm... a sock puppet for President. As we interviewed people for this story, it was interesting to see how many people joked that a sock might be the best option. The goal of the "Sock for President" campaign is to encourage younger voters to become involved and introduce them to candidates they probably haven't heard of. While a lot people believe the two party... I'm not sure I've ever been prouder of an athlete than I was today. What a gorgeous day for a ski race. We're at the bottom of the "Franz's" downhill run at Whistler/Creekside. The world's fastest women on skis are just about to push off from somewhere way to the mountain and blast down 2,000 feet or so of vertical drop at sixty or seventy miles an hour. I've decided there are many little things I can do every day to improve the environment. For a few days, we are getting a respite. No passes are closed. Avalanche danger on Friday, February 15 is down from the high and extreme levels we've witnessed in recent weeks. It will no doubt be back up in the future, if the second half of the winter is anything like the first. Tacoma physician Patricia Russell suspected she wasn't the only parent who lost a child to the "choking game" -- and she was right. Day one is officially in the books at the Peoria sports complex for the Mariners. Howard Lincoln accused me of bringing in chilly weather from Seattle to Arizona. I wouldn't say chilly - it's 60 degrees with a chill. After practice, John McLaren was all smiles. The M's manager was very excited with the energy level of his players and coaches. McLaren says it's truly a joy to have a pitching coach like Mel Stottlemyre on his staff. Stot... Players arrived bright and early the Peoria sports complex. Upon arrival, we sat down with J.J. Putz to get his thoughts on spring training. He says he feels like a little kid and is ready to go, but he also says he has to pace himself so he doesn't push too hard early. After our one-on-one with J.J., he headed into the locker room for a mandatory 8 a.m. meeting with new pitching coach Mel Stottlemyer The day's a little chillie... The story of Bill Trask is heartbreaking for many reasons. While he is developmentally disabled, he was succeeding in life. But after spending just three weeks in the Kitsap County Jail, he became an invalid. We've put up the video produced for the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau about all the things they do to keep the 3 million or so vehicles moving on the streets of Beijing. Great video, beautifully prouduced. Click here to see the video. We'll be running a series of stories this week (5:00 o'clock news, Tuesday-Friday) based on a recent trip to Beijing. An eye-opening trip to Beijing. I have never been there, never been to China, never been to Asia. It was all new and absolutely fascinating. ...Any appraiser will tell you finding the true market value of a piece of property is part art, part science. Human beings do the work. They have to inject their personal opinions and analysis into the ultimate finding. But when we came upon a transaction where the Edmonds School District paid $2,300,000--70% more-- for a p... A Washington state Senate bill being discussed in committee today requires that some drivers convicted of DUI would be required to drive for one year with a fluorescent yellow license plate on their vehicle - a drunk driver's Scarlet Letter, if you will - letting police and others know the person behind the wheel has been caught drivin... When you're an investigative reporter, you get lots of doors slammed in your face. People run away from you. They tell you to get lost. It's not a fun part of the job. If it feels like this is the winter that just won't end...you are right. We are currently in a stubborn La Nina; a cooling of the Pacific which leads to cooler and wetter conditions in Western Washington. New data just out shows that the La Nina is intensifying; meaning more snow in the mountains. Snoqualmie Pass looks like a frozen tundra compared to years past, and if the predictions hold, this could be the snowiest season at the pass i... Getting data on hospital prices can take some work and tenacity. Before you begin the search, check to see if you can receive financial assistance. Every hospital in the state has charity care that provides reduced or free health care to those who qualify. You'll also want to check with the state for Basic Health, a state-sponsored program. After you know your financial options, you're ready to shop. ...I saw first saw it last November, a few days after Ocean Shores beach comber Steve Sauve found it. A 15-foot-long piece of shipwreck... and it looked old. I watched with amazement last week as biologists released fishers back into Olympic National Park. The little cat-sized creature with dark, thick fur looked so out of place in the fresh snow in the park. But before the early 1900s, there was a healthy population of the little predator in the park and in the rest of the stat... We've all been on job interviews at one point or another. We've all tried to impress the hiring manager with our temperament and abilities. A Des Moines woman just showed how you shouldn't act during an interview by not only arguing with the manager but also by allegedly assaulting her, according to Seattle Police. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 5th, asking for charity in parts of Issaquah will be illegal. This will apply to everyone from panhandlers to high school sports teams to firefighters. From then on, they will need to get permission from private property owners to set up shop there and away from the specified areas. The city council recently voted to make panhandling (or asking for anything out of charity) a misdemeanor in particular spots wher... "This was not an accident." |
