The check is not in the mail
I've blogged previously about the danger of sending checks in the mail since I read about the incidents of identity theft reported by the Seattle Police Department every day. Well, I came across another one today I wanted to share.
A North Seattle man this week reported that someone stole mail from his mailbox. The mail contained checks the man was sending to pay his Seattle City Light and Seattle Utilities bills. He left the mail in the mailbox for the mail carrier to pick up, but thieves picked them up first and cashed the checks worth about $230. In the age of automatic online bill pay, I just hate to see check writers continuing to get ripped off. The reality is there are criminals who count on the check being in the mail.
