Stealing Cinnabon's dough

10:15 PM Mon, Jan 28, 2008 |

I couldn't resist the pun that rose quickly to mind on this one. A Seattle Police report from the weekend detailed allegations a Cinnabon manager stole thousands of dollars from his store by pocketing rolls of cash that were supposed to be deposited at the bank.

According to the report, the district manager for Cinnabon called police about his store manager at Northgate Mall. He told officers the suspected manager is in charge of making daily bank deposits for the store.
In December, those deposits started coming up short. By January, the district manager says six deposits were not made at all. It all added up to nearly $5,000 in dough that disappeared.
When confronted, the accused manager denied responsibility for the theft but he was nevertheless let go.
This type of theft is by no means rare. I often read police reports documenting local employees stealing from their employer. Just last week, Sound Chiropractic Center in downtown Seattle reported a now former employee who took seven company checks. The accused worker then forged a company signature and cashed in more than $1100 down in California.

This, of course, is both punny and sad. . . As you point out, the controls that many smaller businesses - particularly retail - have aren't terribly sophisticated. Pretty much they depend on the honesty of the people who work for them.

While I believe that most people do the right thing, it is unfortunate that employees at nickel-and-dime operations put their personal freedom on the line by pocketing cash.

Of course, there are those like the rogue trader at Societe Generale who don't mind sucking down billions of their employer's assets, so, in that respect, we need to thank God for small favors and petty criminals.
