What did UW's Todd Turner do wrong?
That was the question all the journalists had this morning during a press conference with University of Washington President Mark Emmert regarding the surprise resignation of Athletic Director Todd Turner.
I have to tell you long-time beat reporters, columnists, radio hosts, other television reporters and I tried repeatedly - by phrasing the question in different forms - over the course of half an hour to get Dr. Emmert to answer the question, but he would not provide a direct response.
Dr. Emmert credited Turner for bringing integrity back to the athletic department, but said that after three and a half years Turner and the university were no longer a good fit.
The president said several times it wasn't about the losing record of the Husky football team, but wouldn't explain further.
Dr. Emmert did say in response to a reporter question about the significance of wins and losses in general that there are things that are much more important than winning, but winning is important.
It wasn't until the afternoon when Turner spoke to the media that we got a sense of what the elusive answer to the big question was.
