What police didn't find in the Alice Hummel investigation

5:46 PM Thu, Dec 13, 2007 |

As police began to investigate Bruce Hummel's claim that his wife committed suicide, they say they discovered holes in his story. Here are a couple of them.

Bruce Hummel claims he found his wife lying in a large pool of blood in the family's bathroom.
After getting a search warrant, police did a thorough forensic investigation of that bathroom. They took off the baseboards, they took samples, they used special lights and a substance called lumenol that glows where there is trace amounts of blood. But even with all of that, they did not find any of Alice Hummel's blood. If Alice had bled to death in that bathroom, traces of her blood would likely have been found.
Hummel also claims the night he disposed of his wife's body in Bellingham Bay, it was windy and there were white caps on the water. Police say it's unlikely Hummel could have navigated the waters with a makeshift raft and towed his wife's body. Whatsmore, police went back and did a thorough check of the weather reports from October 18, 1990 and found there was no wind that night. In fact, the conditions were calm. That's a far cry from the story they were told by Bruce Hummel.
Neither of these things prove Hummel's guilt or his innocence. But if prosecutors charge him with murder and the case goes to trial, these are items that would likely play in role in deciding his fate.
