Too Old to Ski, Board ?

5:05 PM Mon, Dec 31, 2007 |

Are you of the mind to dismiss skiing, and especially snowboarding, as something for the young crowd?
Do you consider yourself just to old and creaky to climb back onto a pair of skis, even if you used to do it?
Well, don't be surprised if you get some sort of a marketing feeler in the months ahead asking if you would consider screaming down a mountainside once again with a "plank" tied to each boot. (Make that 1 big ...

How Low Can They Go?

10:44 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007 |

Port Orchard sisters Kara Morkert & Erin Brinkerhoff nearly lost their business in Western Washington's flash flood earlier this month.
They have been closed for three weeks, replacing 2-month-old flooring and putting in countless hours trying to reconfigure their damaged heating system and working to accommodate the hundreds of kids expected to return to their dance & music school January 9.

Your condolences for the Carnation family

4:19 PM Wed, Dec 26, 2007 |

Police have identified the victims in the brutal massacre of six members of the same Carnation family on Christmas Eve: Wayne and Judy Anderson, their son Scott Anderson and his wife Erica, and their 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. It's such a terrible, unthinkable crime. Please feel free to post your condolences for their fri...

Generous response to homeless women’s church

7:25 PM Thu, Dec 20, 2007 |

We ran a story Saturday (Dec. 15) about the Church of Mary Magdalene, a church for homeless women that will soon be homeless itself. It needed rent assistance to the tune of $10,000 a year.
Within four days, four people came forward, each offering $10,000!

Is HDTV just a guy thing?

5:11 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007 |

I have a high definition TV. I bought my first set last June and have my eye on buying a bigger one. I am also married, and while my wife also likes the HDTV, it's clear (no pun really intended here) that I'm much more ready to leave the world of 4x3 480-line "standard definition" behind in favor of wide screen 16x9 high definition.

A small token

4:51 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007 |

All too often we find ourselves heads down, minding our own business inside our own personal bubbles, especially our cars. Even the simplest tasks fall into this category... like buying a latte.
At a Starbucks in Marysville, the one on 116th near I-5 to be specific, a woman started something at 8 a.m. that hasn't stopped all day. She bought the person in the car behind her a coffee. That person then bought a drink for the person behind h...

Homeless, but not clueless

3:53 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007 |

Today officials from the City of Seattle took reporters on a tour of several illegal homeless camps.
No one knew quite what to expect as we approached the tents and tarps that these unfortunate people call home. Then we found one person stirring inside.

A rapid recovery

5:33 PM Fri, Dec 14, 2007 |

Some businesses got open last weekend, some today, more will in the days ahead. I'm talking about the Chehalis Centralia area so hard hit by the storm that will soon be two weeks behind us.
According to the Centralia Chehalis Chamber of Commerce, 85 to 90 percent of businesses are open to customers. That may mean customers will enter stores where the lower half of the wallboard has been removed and is slated for replacement. Repairs are ...

What police didn't find in the Alice Hummel investigation

5:46 PM Thu, Dec 13, 2007 |

As police began to investigate Bruce Hummel's claim that his wife committed suicide, they say they discovered holes in his story. Here are a couple of them.

What did UW's Todd Turner do wrong?

8:24 PM Tue, Dec 11, 2007 |

That was the question all the journalists had this morning during a press conference with University of Washington President Mark Emmert regarding the surprise resignation of Athletic Director Todd Turner.
I have to tell you long-time beat reporters, columnists, radio hosts, other television reporters and I tried repeatedly - by phrasi...

A beacon in the night

10:10 PM Mon, Dec 10, 2007 |

Sometimes it all just works. Setting up for our late broadcasts in Centralia in front of a flooded-out home, our technical team was adjusting the lighting.
Just then the homeowner arrived. Her first thought was looters, then she recognized our KING 5 coats.
Armed with a small flashlight, she was going to root around for some things. But our lights were a beacon in the night. They allowed her to spend some extra time in her home.

Should she be running a preschool?

5:52 PM Mon, Dec 10, 2007 |

When the owner of Grandma Lynda's Daycare admitted she put a 4-year-old child in the trunk of her car as disciplinary measure, the state immediately revoked her daycare license.
A few weeks later, we learn she's now opening a preschool. Can that be legal?
We find out, yes, it is.
Under Washington State statute, if you operate a preschool for fewer than four hours a day and offer educational programming, you are exempt from li...

Reporter returns to the Centralia flood to help grandma

11:04 AM Mon, Dec 10, 2007 |

I love Centralia.

It's where I first learned to hit a fastball, at the old "Hit-a-Ton".
It's where I first learned to shoot a basketball.
I've had several meals at the "Country Cousin" and I have run around the "Yard Birds" down the road.

It's where I returned this weekend, to help my grandmother dig out after the flood waters swallowed her home.

The disaster need in the back of our minds

7:48 PM Fri, Dec 07, 2007 |

It's something that's growing in the field of disaster preparedness. Attention paid to the economy after disaster strikes. ...specifically jobs.
Savings lives during and after an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane and tornado is obviously priority number one.
Providing shelter is a close second, and as both are closely intertwined.
But what used to get overlooked in disaster discussions is the subject of the econ...

Coffee With That Roadblock?

8:33 AM Fri, Dec 07, 2007 |

Want to know what's really happening behind the scenes of the Western WA flood disaster? Unsung acts of kindness.
In all honesty, every single police officer and fire fighter I have personally encountered has gone out of his/her way to be helpful.

I'm Wind Whipped

11:42 AM Mon, Dec 03, 2007 |

I've covered a bunch of storms over the course of my career, and this one is a doozy.
Photographer Rob Schaefer, Live Truck Operator Bob Konis, and I all headed from Seattle toward Ocean Shores at 1:30 a.m. We didn't know we'd be in for such an adventure.
