I knew it would happen. I’m just too weak to hold my tongue. During a perfectly fine dinner with friends over the Thanksgiving holiday I got sucked into the pointless debate over wishing someone “Merry Christmas” versus “Happy Holidays.” I say the debate is pointless because at the end of my spirited discussion, all I had managed to accomplish was to leave my wife embarrassed and a drumstick firmly planted in my dear friend’s “giblets.” I’m not here to rehash the whole debate over which position is right. Most peoples’ beliefs are too firmly set on this one for me to make any difference. My question is, what do I say to the person who tries to suck me in to this rhetorical quagmire where there can clearly be no winner, and the end result is hurt feelings and candied yams being slung across the table. Short of dunking my head into a vat of eggnog whenever the issue arises, I’m at a loss as how to avoid this nagging holiday, I mean Christmas dilemma. Your advice is desperately needed. 3 Comments |
Well, Eric, all I can say is enjoy the leftovers. They always seem to taste better the next day. As far as the point of political correctness, there really is no such thing. What is really politically correct is the fact that this is still the United States of America and ALL of us American citizens bear the right of FREE SPEECH. I'm damned sick and tired of whining snivlers telling me and you what we can say. Sorry. It doesn't work that way here. Say what you want, Eric. Exercise your right of free speech. If they choose not to say it back, that is their right.
Merry Christmas to all.
Say whatever your heart tells you to say...but when someone wishes you "blessed be" or "Happy Hanukkah", remember to say thank you for they are also wishing you well.
God Bless and Merry Christmas!
Well, I've learned to say "Merry Christmas" when someone says it to me first..
but then I say "Happy Holidays" if someone says it first..
oh and "Happy Hanukkah" if my Jewish friends phone me first...
As for Kwanzaa.. well?
So usually, I don't say anything!
As for your particular dilemma, I'd say what a waste of perfectly good candied yams?!!
Happy Christmanukkah Holidays to you!
