Car Prowl Bonanza

6:41 PM Fri, Nov 30, 2007 |

Every time I read Seattle police incident reports, I'm surprised as a reporter and amazed as a resident.
On any given day, there are dozens of cars that are broken into all across the city. In every neighborhood, at all times of the day, thieves pry, break, and force open cars. They steal gym bags, GPS devices, CD's, clothes, medications, you name it.
And this time of year car prowls are seeing a bonanza in the form of Christmas sh...

Not enough beds

8:56 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |

There's one more reason the families we profiled in our story can't access group home treatment for the mentally ill children they adopted out of foster care. There isn't enough space, or as they say in the industry, "not enough beds."
These resources are so scarce in Washington State that placements are saved for children in stat...

A matter of faith and choice

4:33 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |

14-year-old Dennis Lindberg wants to live.

Diagnosed with a treatable form of leukemia, the survival rate is 70-percent over 5 years for patients who are treated. But the treatment takes its toll on the body, requiring blood transfusions. But as much as Dennis wants to live, he has refused the transfusions because of his belief in the Jehovah's Witness faith.

14-year-olds cannot drive a car, they cannot vote, they cannot enlist...

A Drumstick to the Giblets

4:59 PM Tue, Nov 27, 2007 |

I knew it would happen. I’m just too weak to hold my tongue. During a perfectly fine dinner with friends over the Thanksgiving holiday I got sucked into the pointless debate over wishing someone “Merry Christmas” versus “Happy Holidays.”

Ticket troubles?

9:18 PM Mon, Nov 26, 2007 |

When speaking with both sides of this issue, one thing rang true: Everyone at the state patrol wants safer roads.
But how to get there is where both sides strongly disagree.
Trooper Tommie Pillow is president of the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association. He was the only person who could speak to us on camera about this issue.

Are you protected?

3:24 PM Mon, Nov 26, 2007 |

When my producer suggested we do our own Katrina-type follow-up to last December's windstorm, I didn't think we would find many problems.
After the initial blast, I hadn't heard many complaints.
So, I was surprised when I started calling people who'd complained to the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC). Their complaints were listed as "closed," meaning the cases were resolved. But few of the people I talked...

Antarctica Cruise Passenger from Issaquah?

7:40 PM Fri, Nov 23, 2007 |

While waiting in line at the Issaquah Post Office Monday (11/19), I overheard a woman telling her friend she was spending Thanksgiving .. in fact, almost a month .. on a cruise to Antarctica. Now comes word that a ship called the MS Explorer is stricken and all its passengers evacuated. Could this woman be one of the 13 Americans onboard? How is she? WHO is she? Contact us if you know! Ski Washington

5:56 PM Fri, Nov 23, 2007 |

Mission Ridge Ski Area wins the plum this year for being the first ski area open in the state. Where mother nature hasn't quite cooperated for westside ski areas, (Mt. Baker usually winning that title for first open.) A little, no make that a lot, of man made equipment has won the day for Mission Ridge. They can make their own snow, with frigid temperatures, water and electrical power. They can cover all their runs.
Mission Ri...

Tony Harris' Death - Can't Believe It

8:17 AM Thu, Nov 22, 2007 |

Full Disclosure - I remember Tony Harris, and his days on the WSU Basketball Team.
I watched many of his games, while I was in school there, and remember him for his scoring prowess.
For that reason, I've followed his bizarre story probably more closely than the average person.
And, I can't believe the Brazilian police, with what we know right now.
I find it hard to believe we know the full story and whether, for sure, ...

Political rivals unite - how strange

4:26 PM Wed, Nov 21, 2007 |

Political campaigns tend to focus on the reasons political opponents disagree with one another.
And sometimes there's the mud that never seems to wash away, even after the campaign is done.
In Snohomish County, though, Sheriff-elect John Lovick has chosen two of his former opponents to help lead the department.

Thanksgiving news coverage: Just like clockwork

5:25 PM Tue, Nov 20, 2007 |

Why do we do it?
Every Thanksgiving, figuring out what to put in a newscast or on the web is like clockwork, and you already know what's coming before you turn on the tube or hop on the net.
First, there is the standard – holiday travel. The Wednesday (and sometimes Tuesday) beforehand, we have a reporter standing at Snoqualmie Pass or at Sea-Tac Airport telling you it's going to be busy – as if this year was any different than la...

A mystery washes ashore

5:20 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007 |

In Ocean Shores today, I saw the piece of what is likely from an old ship's keel. Ocean Shores resident Steve Sauve found it over the weekend while making his usual rounds of the beach.
The Ocean Shores Interpretive Center has taken on the job of figuring out just what it is and perhaps what kind of ship it came from. Maybe even a name? There's always hope.
However, our hopes could be dashed on the rocks if the experts conclude i...

What's going on inside the King County Medical Examiner's Office?

4:53 PM Mon, Nov 19, 2007 |

It was more than four year ago that I first I got a call from an insider at the King County Medical Examiner's Office with a shocking allegation - that a baby's body had vanished from the morgue in the middle of a murder investigation.
It sounded like something out of a horror movie, but it was true. The missing body was never found and an audit concluded that the thief was probably a disgruntled employee who either stole the body for so...

SkyKING helps rescue stranded woman

7:27 PM Sat, Nov 17, 2007 |

Here's some insider insight into Friday night's rescue operation in Mason County.
A woman was stranded on a logging road just north of Lilliwaup. Her boyfriend had just gone over a cliff in their SUV. KING 5s helicopter, SkyKING, first spotted the woman and called in the location to rescue teams. SkyKING landed on the soggy...

Have a politically correct Holiday!

6:08 PM Fri, Nov 16, 2007 |

Roll your eyes with me, please!
Are we getting too politically correct when we ask school teachers to describe Thanksgiving as a time of "mourning?"
When a store decides to call Christmas trees "family trees?"
When department store Santas are asked to say "Ha Ha Ha" instead of "Ho Ho Ho" because it might be offensive to some women?
(All news stories we reported this week.)
How should we handle these requests for...

Sears service agreements: Worth the money?

7:34 PM Thu, Nov 15, 2007 |

They're called extended warranties or service agreements. And chances are, if you buy anything from a television to a stove, the salesperson will try to sell you one.
People buy them because they offer peace of mind. But are they worth it?

We'll Miss Bill Hosokawa: Journalist and Author

11:35 PM Wed, Nov 14, 2007 |

Do you have a mentor? Someone who inspires you to "go for it" and have no fear? Bill Hosokawa, a Seattle native and a longtime editor at the Denver Post was just such a person. The 92 year old Hosokawa died November 9, 2007 after coaching dozens of reporters over the years, even though a University of Washignton professor told him no American newspaper would ever hire him because of his Japanese ancestry. He not only proved him wrong, Hosokaw...

Taking all and giving nothing

5:41 PM Mon, Nov 12, 2007 |

I'm sure that many of you who respond to phone calls for a charitable cause do it for two reasons: 1) You want to get off the phone and back to the dinner table. 2) You believe that SOME of the money you give will go to a good cause.
You've heard the warnings about the professional fundraisers who suck up most of the money, but perhaps you reason that a portion of the money will go to a worthwhile charity (many of which do use costly pro...

Perugia murder rocks Seattle sister city group

6:38 PM Thu, Nov 08, 2007 |

"This is not the best way for the world to discover that Seattle has a sister city in Italy," comments Mike James by e-mail.
James, a former KING 5 anchorman, is active in the Seattle Perugia Sister City program and has become a media source to the world’s journalists after the arrest over the weekend of a University of Washington student in a murder investigation in the picturesque Italian town.

Arrrgh! Too much good material!

5:46 PM Wed, Nov 07, 2007 |

This is the kind of story that can be torture for a news reporter.

I spent time Monday with Emanuel Vardi and his wife Lenore, new arrivals in North Bend. He is a classical music superstar, a viola player of the highest rank in his day, somebody who performed with the NBC Symphony Orcherstra and Arturo Toscanini, who played the biggest stages and with the most important conductors in the world, who made landmark recordings and helped t...

When the alarm comes in

4:43 PM Wed, Nov 07, 2007 |

The Western Air Defense Sector at McChord Air Force Base is a very protected place. It contains lots of classfied information, much of it on computer screens. Needless to say, visits there by the media are not frequent.
I did visit there today, part of a story we were doing on WADS' unprecedented involvement in the huge California firefighting effort. The men and women who work there are from the Washington Air National Guard, along with...

Immigration round-ups: A clean sweep?

3:34 PM Wed, Nov 07, 2007 |

Our story on the federal government's efforts to round up criminal aliens will fan the hot debate over immigration in this country.
Immigration rights groups feel this, and other law enforcement initiatives, are thinly disguised efforts to round up all undocumented immigrants in this country.
The head of ICE's Detention and Removal Operations in the Northwest told me that it will take his task force five or six years to round up th...

MRSA and the overuse of antibiotics

8:29 AM Wed, Nov 07, 2007 |

Monday another case of MRSA was discovered in Port Townsend. This time it involved an adult staffer at a pre-school --- bringing the total number of cases to two.

MRSA is not new.
In the past it was most common in hospitals and nursing homes. Lately however, we've been seeing new cases in schools and work places. ...

Now here's something to watch

7:25 PM Mon, Nov 05, 2007 |

Even for your friendly aerospace reporter, they're pretty rare. I'm talking about watching a Kaman at work. No, this is not a story about a misspelled member of the crocodile family; it's a helicopter that is truly bizarre.
I've seen them on occasion fighting forest fires. Today I watched one for hours at close range as it precisely placed elements of 19...

Pony deaths a tragedy for all.

5:04 PM Sun, Nov 04, 2007 |

The last thing Tonya Mason wanted to do was see any more pain. She had watched two beloved horses suffer with ever worsening medical conditions. She had also seen how the loss of such beloved animals can inflict terrible pain on the human heart.

Mayors step up in support of environment

5:29 AM Sat, Nov 03, 2007 |

Now that the National Mayors' Climate Summit has wrapped up in Seattle, I can take a breath and reflect. What is most striking to me is how these politicians are ignoring some obvious risks.

Sure it's easy to be a green mayor in cities like Seattle, Portland, or L.A. But think of what it takes for the mayor of Austin, Texas or Trenton, New Jersey to lead their citizens down Green Street.

Judge's stern words for admitted drunk driver

10:37 PM Fri, Nov 02, 2007 |

King County Superior Court Judge Julie Spector minced no words at Roberto Cedeno's sentencing. "It is a miracle that Donn Potteiger survived," she declared from the bench.
Cedeno pleaded guilty to driving drunk and slamming into King County deputy Potteiger's motorcycle on July 29. Cedeno's blood alcohol level was point-31, nearly four times the legal limit. Potteiger nearly died. His right leg was amputated and he's had to relearn simp...

To swim, or not to swim?

9:45 PM Thu, Nov 01, 2007 |

When I first saw video of the techniques used by "Infant Swimming Resource," it was on the Internet. I must admit, my jaw dropped and I felt a little sick. I have a toddler at home, and my maternal instinct immediately went into Mama Bear mode. No WAY would I do that to my child!
