Snohomish County rape suspect arrested – on camera

This story was such an adrenaline rush, that I had to blog about it.

KING 5 reporter Tonya Mosley, freelance reporter Charlotte Starck and I were assigned this morning to the story about the wanted Snohomish County rape suspect. We were set up in front of the Snohomish County Courthouse, getting ready to interview the detective handling the case. I had my camera on my tripod, a good color balance, and my mic levels were set. I was framing the interview shot when the detective pulled out his pistol, quickly moved to the left of Tonya, Charlotte and I and yelled: "Larry get on the ground now!"

I panned left and started to roll. My heart was pumping and adrenaline was moving through my veins! Anytime a gun is pulled out right in front of you, which has only happened a handful of times in my seven-year career, it is very exciting to say the least. I didn't know if I should stay put or move for cover.

The detective did a great job getting the suspect down, so I decided to stay and continue getting the shot. I stayed framed wide for a while, in order not to miss anything. When the situation seemed to calm down a bit more, I zoomed in to get a tight shot of the suspect on the ground and then a shot of the detective with his gun out, calling for back-up. Tonya then moved closer with my mic and asked him a few questions regarding his warrant and possible charges; he denied them and said he was here to turn himself in. A few officers arrived from Everett PD and made the arrest without incident.

We interviewed the suspect's brother who was with him, and the detective regarding making the arrest. His brother was upset, saying the officer did not need to pull out his gun. The detective explained that it is protocol, especially when you have a suspect who is wanted for rape and assault with a deadly weapon.

As a photojournalist, this kind of story is rare. To be covering the search for a wanted suspect and have him show up, we were saying "gee-whiz" all the way home.

We put together a story for the noon news and it is now on KING5.com. Check it out.

Good job

This shines a bad light on the police. First, the guy was turning himself in, and had been to 2 or three other locations that simply turned him away. No sense of urgency there. Then the cop puts every person on the roads and sidewalks in danger by calling in the whole local police force which had to speed through streets and intersections to get there. Finally, the cop that comes running in to get on camera tries to break the guy's arm cuffing him. You could see the agony on his face. Hello!! The guy was not fighting, and he is a SUSPECT, not a convict. That kind of behavior does not help your image.

Looks like controlled use of proper procedure to me... Suspected "bad guy" in custody safely with no one injured... Your preference would be?

I happened to be at the County complex doing business for my employer exactly at the time this was all coming down. My co-worker and I felt imperiled by both the person holding the gun (we could not see that he was a policeman)and the possible (unknown) threat of the person being held at gunpoint on the ground. It definitely sounds like this guy needs to be in custody pending further investigation, even though he is still technically innocent until proven guilty. The crime he is accused of is heinous and the rapist, whoever he is, needs to be prosecuted. However, now that I know the whole story, I'm livid at the way this was handled by the first staff that had contact with this individual claiming to have a warrant out for his arrest. Why was he not taken into custody until the warrant could be verified? Did they really think that sending this guy on a wild goose chase to turn himself in was in the public's best interest? In the raw video footage on KING 5, many civilians are seen walking around in the background, wondering what was going on. Because the news crew was there, at first we thought it was a demonstration for tv or something. When we figured out that it was for real, we reversed direction and went a different way. I've heard the detective's justification for pulling the gun, but, again, where was his concern for public safety when the suspect apparently would have been cuffed willingly. If the suspect had started running, we can only assume the detective would have started firing, into crowded downtown streets. Otherwise, why were cuffs not pulled out instead of the gun? If that is protocol, then we all need to remember that our safety is in jeopardy, not only from the criminals, but also from those whose first priority is pursuing those criminals with public safety falling somewhere lower.

When I saw this on the website I thought it was ridiculous that when he says he was turning himself in he had to go to a few offices and they wouldn't help him. They need to figure out who they were and determine what went wrong. I personally would help someone if they wanted to turn themselves in. I agree that it would be the publics best interest not to send a wanted person on a wild goose chase.

i just saw the segment on the morning news. I like the Suspect's brother's comment:
"That's when 'Supercop' decided to pull his gun out." Priceless.

Doesn't look like there was much (any) threat to the public safety by the Detective to me. Also doesn't look like any cops tried to break this guy's arms getting the cuffs on. However, how is the Detective to know this guy (a violent offender) doesn't have a gun and would use it to get away (maybe the Detective should be able to read the minds of violent offenders and what they are up to). Maybe all cops should be accompanied by psychics in the future.

I can't believe some of these people's responses. The detective's conduct was very appropriate in this situation. The suspect is accused of first degree rape, a violent felony involving a deadly weapon (which he could have been carrying at the time). The detective had no way of verifying that the suspect was turning himself in even if the suspect claimed that is what he was doing. If you think people don't lie to the police, then I have some waterfront property in Arizona I'd like to sell to you. This situation was handled safely and propely. A suspect in a violent sex crime was arrested and no one was injured during the arrest. What more can you ask for??? People with no knowledge of police procedure (no, watching CSI and Law and Order does NOT count) need to stop armchair quarterbacking what the police do. Especially when no one is injured and the bad guy goes to jail.

People,
1st, the guy was trying to turn himself in...the "get down on the ground" bit, was un-neccesary...

The guy was not in agony, but he was frustrated because this didn't have to happen. He was on his way to where he was directed to TURN HIMSELF IN!

I agree with the brother's comment about "supercop". It was funny, but appropriate under the circumstances.

The detective however, did not know that he was trying to turn himself in...but on the other hand, why in the heck would a criminal be blatantly walking in a police station courtyard when he knows they are looking for him? Der!

I mean, Come on! Even though he allegedly raped someone, at least he had the manlihood to turn himself in. Gotta give him credit for that at least.

The guy was unarmed too...needless to say, it was a little bit of an over-the-top reaction on the part of the police in this situation.

So, I'm sure we'd have much different responses on here had the detective just said "great! thanks for coming by, hold on while I get my handcuffs" Get real! he used necessary force for a dangerous suspect he had been pursuing. It doesn't always happen cut and dry, off the streets, in back alleys, away from public view. I'm glad he turned himself in, had the perseverance to keep going from building to building - it was very lucky that the one detective that recognized him followed procedure and got this guy into custody. He's off the street and that's what counts. "Supercop"?? please - get over it, your family member is accused of some very serious things - would it still be "supercop" when your daughter, mother or sister is brutally raped? I think not.

Wow... i don't know if this is funny or just plain stupid. How could you NOT know that a guy in a uniform yelling get down on the ground wasn't a cop? Liquid lunch, huh? Here's this cop doing an interview about this guy & turns around to see the suspect! Yikes! I have been supremely annoyed enough with the Everett PD to file a formal complaint against one of the officers, so I'm not thier number one fan. So here's a guy that is suspected of a brutal crime, with a deadly weapon: What did you all want him to do? Play patty-cake with him? Buy him a rose, take him to dinner, buy him a latte? I come from a large family of criminals & cops, the most exciting memory I have is of a wanted murderer coming into the precinct to get fingerprinted for a gun permit, so yes, most people who break the law have no respect for it, alot think they're smarter than everyone else. Oh wait... How bout we only hire psychic cops so that he could read his mind, yeah, that's it (oops look like someone already said something close to this) Okay but to the rocket scientist that said he wasn't armed... So you confirmed that yourself? Geez maybe you should've run up & told the cop that so we could've just avoided this whole thing. I'm telling you what, if that was my daughter, mother sister, friend whatever I'd be buying the cop a rose, dinner & a latte! Believe that! I know there better not be any kind of an inquest into this matter what so ever. Atleast we know now that they will change thier policies regarding voluntary commitments so this won't happen again. No one even knows if the guy is guilty but he was acuused of a violent crime care must be taken, what would everyone be saying if he was armed & shot the officer maybe taking his life? I might've wanted to kick one of them in the shin, but I just get a kick out of what a bunch of jerks everyone tries to say the cops are but if you're in trouble the first 3 numbers you're going to dial is 911, & who do you think is going to be there? Not your buddies, not the bank, just some underpayed misty eyed guy who still thinks he might be able to change he world with hope a handgun & a kevlar vest.

Hmmm...smells like PD getting caught up in lights, action, camera to me???

The "alleged" suspect who was "Turning Himself IN" was turned away & sent across the street where SuperCop just happened to be waiting to give a live interview with local News Crew...

When they sent him away across the street they knew they were sending him to be arrested live on TV...

what happened to walkie talkies...Supercob used his cell phone???

Correction... I just watched the video & realized it was in fact a plainclothes detective, but the fact that he did say freeze get down on the ground is not one of thee most common phrases for your local hoodlum, my mistake. Okay so now it's a "conspiracy" okay... Yep I'm sure that the jail knew the detective was outside & thought "you know... Detective so & so is such a great guy... he sure could use the media coverage so we'll just go ahead & send this guy out here for him so we can catch the whole thing on tape" The truly sad thing about this is you'll probably get some idiot at ACLU or NAACP to buy this garbage. Hey how about if you or your family members get raped, robbed, murdered, or in any way victimized make sure you don't call the "Big mean policeman's" they might actually catch the people responsible & give them a boo-boo or hurt thier wittle feelings.

My daughter was a victim of this man. Words can not express how relieved I was when he was arrested. This man has NO RIGHTS!! What rights did my daughter have? NONE he did what he wanted and did not care he was hurting her. This man needs to receive the brutality that he did to my child. May he rot in hell. This man has raped many women. Threatened them with their lives. No the detective did do what he was to do. Had I have been the one with the gun, I'd of put the him out of his...
