Non-offensive Sea-Tac decorations?

9:38 PM Thu, Oct 18, 2007 |

There’s no doubt this year’s winter (not holiday) decorations at Sea-Tac Airport will be festive and bright. Port of Seattle officials hope they’ll be one other thing – non controversial! (See story on KING5.com)
Last December, a local rabbi asked that a menorah be displayed along with Christmas trees in the concourse. In response, the Port removed the trees. After a national outcry, the rabbi withdrew the threat of a lawsuit and the trees were replaced.
An advisory committee representing religious congregations, academia, law and retailers was assembled and presented its recommendations for this year’s display in July. They said the decorations should “reflect the Pacific Northwest environment and our diverse community and convey universal values, such as peace and harmony…” They also asked that no specific religious symbols be used.
This year’s decorations are SO uncontroversial, you can’t even fault them for being damaging to the environment. The 5,000 square feet of tree trunks will be made from 100 percent recyclable cardboard tubes textured with non-toxic cement and use 46 LED fixtures consuming 15 times less energy than conventional stage lights!

Perry Cooper, Media Relations person from Sea Tac Airport says the decorations cost $300,000 and come from aviation contingency funds ... not taxpayer dollars.

I think it is a shame that in America we are being told more and more that we have to put our Christmas things away out of sight because we are offending other people from other countries. Well what about offending Us who are from America. We should be able to decorate and celebrate as we were brought up with our traditions also.
Thank You

Though the new SeaTac decorations look nice, I am sickened by the erosion of American tradition that this represents. I think Amerika is dead and we just haven't woken up to that fact yet.

Well said Lori.

Actually, that was Cindy, well said.

Ditto, Cindy

We are the country of everything for everybody, but nothing for ourselves.

I am an anarchist and symbols of peace and harmony offend me greatly. Please reconsider your decorations this year or I will be forced to sue you.

end sarcasm

We have become a society of crybabies, some people get offended at drop of a hat, and unfortunately due to cowering leaders and unscrupulous lawyers we all get bent over.

What a shame that we are forced to forget where we come from. We talk about how wonderful diveristy is but then we use it to smash our orginal beliefs and symbols.

To all:

Now you know how the original residents of North America felt when they were FORCED to give up their traditions and their way of life. Hmm, my grandfather was beaten by the priests if he spoke Ojibwe (Chippewa) at a Jesuit school in the early 1900s. Celebrating in the old Objibwe ceremony and tradition was out of the question. I agree that the elimination of tradition equals the erosion of society. Ask any indian on the "rez".

dgz said:

While enlightening Zigiigan, your post is not entirely relevant. No one beating or forcing their beliefs on me, so I don't really know how the 'original residents of North America felt'. The decorations up at Sea-Tac were secular decorations. But because of one ridiculous so called rabbi, the powers that be at Sea-Tac caved when it came to holiday decorations. Was there a Jesus being displayed at Sea-Tac last year..no there wasn't. Christmas to most people is about as religious as Super Bowl Sunday. It has largely been relagated to a holiday to share with one' s family.

I am the one that is offended, offended that I can not enjoy the CHRISTMAS season. This country has become so oversensitive that in some jobs you can be written up for just saying "Merry Christmas" to a client or customer. I know, I was. Its time we stopped this whole PC movement.

This is just sad. The "PC" thing has indeed gone way too far. Why not just put up a menorah in addition to the trees? The recently invented holiday of Kwanzaa can be included too... though why they had to put that at the same time of year as Christmas and Chanukah (sp?), I'll never know. As if we don't have enough to do keeping up with all the PC ins and outs of the holidays that already existed at that time. You couldn't have put Kwanzaa in Fall or Spring or Summer? Let's make things more complicated and see how many more feelings we can hurt and how many more people we have to try and please and assuage during the winter holidays!!! Yeah, that was a great idea. People are indeed getting overly sensitive. Who could be offended by someone greeting them with a Merry Christmas!?!?! Even if they don't celebrate Christmas? I certainly don't get offended when someone says "Happy Chanukah" or "Happy Kwanzaa" to me. I think it's nice. Just people trying to spread some cheer and good wishes. Now they tell us we can't give out holiday greetings or put up decorations unless they are totally watered-down, "non-offending" oatmeal-y mush? LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE!

linda said:

By the way, if the Port of seattle is trying to "reflect the Pacific Northwest Environment" why don't they use the State tree (Western Hemlock) in the display instead of birch trees?
Gosh, maybe the state will have to change our state tree so it's not in the "shape" of a Christmas Tree!!

R said:

For those in favor of elimating any decorations which are associated with "Christmas", I say fine: just don;t ask for the day off. Last time I checked, Federal, state and local governmental agencies, and most pvt companies (except retail!), recognize Dec. 25 as a holiday - and they call it CHRISTMAS.

patricia said:

Lighten up, spiritually and literally, please. I will continue to hang our "winter lights" on the winter solstice and leave them up until the spring equinox. Cheerful lights to lighten up the short gray days and long gray nights. And you know what? People have complained about that, too. Some people have such dreary lives that they will complain about anything and - sometimes - everything! I feel great sympathy for them.

JJ said:

I'm sorry but these new decorations are truly awful...$300,000 for that?

And since when did Christmas trees become religious symbols?

skok said:

LOL. the decorations are right out of South Park, after their politically correct christmas fiasco. why doesnt Sea-Tac just not decorate? its an airport, not a motel.

Evergreen trees are a religious symbol, wonder when we'll have to remove every evergreen in the state

Patti said:

I am "offended" by people trying to suck the joy out of others' lives.
It is one thing to have your own religious preference - this is America - you are welcome to it; but to dictate what can or can't be done (even as petty as holiday decorations) from one religion to another? It is insane.
It goes a lot deeper than decorations at the airport. I shouldn't get a phone call from the SCHOOL when my son says "Christmas" because it offended somebody's mother!
Lighten up is right!

It makes me sad that my greatgrandchildern, do not get to see the holidays celebrated as I did as a kid also my kids did.I know they are missing out of the warm feeling that we had.School Xmas plays sharing gifts openly,Now they have to call our traditions by different names. Can't we fined someone with enough guts to stand up for our rights. If some don't like the way we do things here I think they know what I think they can do.Like to wish all a Very Merry Christmas and Peace in the New Year.Greatgrandma.

Ah! The Grinch is alive and well. I wonder what the response would be to my threatening Televive International with a law suit because they don't have any Christmas trees on display? I could be looking forward to being snuffed by any number of groups. I think this quasi-Rab should focus more on contributing to the enlightenment and the betterment of all folk.

Jeff said:

People threatening to sue over Christmas trees so they can get and spend money that says "In God We Trust". Unbelievable.

shawny said:

the whole PC thing has gone way over into ridiculous behavior subjecting all of us on eggshell walking and feeling uncomfortable about ever last holiday we all celebrate mo matter what that may be. I say loosen up a bit and take it easy. The whole subject is out of control. Holiday parties at school are now winter parties and the fun of drawing a christmas tree or coloring a santa has turned into a crime in school. wonderful christmas cookies of lambs and bells and trees not too popular because someone might be offended and forbid if a lil kid mentions that he goes to church on Sundays and happen to mentions what he learned on that day. RIDICULOUS and absurd. The PC folks need to watch their manners they are walking on others rights and have been.

SONYA said:

PUT THE XMAS TREES UP AND STOP YOUR WHINING.IF YOU DONT LIKE THE WAY THEY LOOK THAN DONT LOOK OR FIND OTHER WAYS TO TRAVEL,

Ted said:

Merry Christmas everyone!
That's what I say to people and could care less if they don't like it.
I never say happy holiday, seasons greetings or anything other than Merry Christmas because all the others are politically correct, which I'm not!
So sue me!
