One joy of journalism is seeing things I might not otherwise. But after a decade on the job, I sometimes grow cynical and feel like I've seen it all. Then, I get dispatched to Redmond, where a 1,800-pound bull named Titan is wandering through an upscale neighborhood. A few minutes after we arrive, a group of neighbors helps the bull's owner catch him, using gentle encouragement and loaves of bread. It was one of the stranger sights I've seen, and a welcome diversion from the sometimes terrible stories we must also cover as reporters. We heard about the escapee steer from a viewer who spotted the bull in his yard. He was genuinely surprised when we showed up, saying, "Must be a slow news day!" It was -- but a loose bull is a good assignment on any day. It just goes to show, if you think something in your backyard is newsworthy, it never hurts to let us know. |
