Puget Sound's surrogate parents

Seattle's "Seal Sitters" want you to help protect baby seals around Puget Sound. They're asking waterfront property owners to anchor small floats, rafts or platforms off their property so that baby seals can lounge there while their mothers are out fishing for food.

Seals that sleep on the beach are at risk of being hurt by pollution, people and their pets. The group has inquired as to whether the city of Seattle would set a few floats up around the city's busiest beach, Alki in West Seattle. About a dozen seal pups have been spotted on the crowded beach this summer. It appears, though, that liability and budget issues will likely keep that from happening. There could also be some environmental issues and regulations that property owners could run into if they want to anchor anything in Puget Sound or other public waters. For now, it looks like the "Seal Sitters" will have to continue acting as surrogate parents to the pups to help keep them safe.
