Controversial Curfew

6:07 PM Wed, Sep 26, 2007 |

How does one weigh a juvenile's liberties versus other citizens' safety concerns? Federal Way is delicately crafting a curfew proposal for juveniles that would make it illegal to be on the streets between midnight and 6AM, with certain exceptions.

The goal is to cut down on graffiti and other juvenile related crime. The problem is, the state Supreme Court struck down a different juvenile curfew four years ago, ruling that Sumner's vague curfew infringed on juveniles' constitutional liberties. Is it right to restrict all teens after hours because of the crimes of some? What do you think?

When the Global Poverty Act passed yesterday in the U.S. House of Reps I was surprised it didn't get coverage. The bill was introduced by Congressman Adam Smith of Tacoma and campaigned by the Borgen Project so it seemed like a big win for the region.

Putting teenagers on curfew should be the job of parents. however, in this day of self esteem over discipline, parents have no control over their kids, nor does current kids laws Allow parents to discipline their kids (without $10,000 in bogus child abuse legal bills).

I generally oppose Any Nanny State government telling us what to (or not to) do. However, givin that parents wont control their offspring, a city curfew seems pertinent.

Federal Way is taking a step in the right direction. This is not a government nanny program; it is community support for parents who are having a difficult time imposing restrictions and boundaries on teens. Our communities have gotten too liberal; parents have far less authority or respect than ever before. What has all this liberal freedom in our community done to produce positive outcome? We now read stories about kids murdering kids, families, and strangers. We have gangs of kids running unfocused and uninfluenced by positive energy. I say lets pull together, take the control back and start operating as strong communities instead of disconnected entities.

I hope the surrounding communities follow their lead.

It is a shame that Federal Way has to take a stand on this subject. It is the parents responsibility to raise their children, not the city.

Children have no business being out that late, 2 or 3 in the morning? Please.

Curfews could be extended on weekend nights (Friday and Saturday) to allow for movies and parties to end, but week nights, those kids should be home, not out on the streets.

Will a curfew really help? Are the teens that are causing all the problems really going to abide by this law. Parents need to get a grip and handle the disciplining of their children. You can discipline your child without being charged if the discipline doesn't involve harming your child. Maybe the City Council should spend this time coming up with more money to pay for more police officers to patrol the streets and catch the vandals in the act.

I am the girl who got her car vandalized, my mom has been on the news twice now with my car. I really think the curfew is a great idea. I am 20 now but I grew up in Federal Way and I can tell you that even though my friends and I weren't vandalizing things, we sure weren't doing completely legal acts at 12 am or 2 am.
Not only do I support the curfew but I think that the Federal Way Police need to start doing their job. I never see the cops by my parents house when I am home visiting; even when I lived there, they were never there. When my car got vandalized a mere week and a half after I (with no help from my parents) bought it, I called the police and they wouldn't even come to my house!
Sure parents should control their children but some can't, whether it is because their kids are just brats, or they work two jobs. With or without the curfew the police should be around more, the only time I see them is when they are pulling people over, but god forbid they partrol the neighborhoods at 2 am catching the punks who threw a rock through my car and through my neighbor's living room window!
I hope the curfew goes into effect and that the police start showing themselves in the neighborhoods to catch vandals and not JUST speeders.

The curfew would do very little. The causes of crimes that occur after midnight are completely unrelated to how late it is. It is more related to how the child was raised by the school system(seeing as how the government no longer cares for parents raising their children). If a school does not have strict rules and force abidement, bad tendencies and thought patterns will develop.

Enforcing something like this would be a severe infringement on rights. Just because someone isn't over 18 does not mean that they do not have rights. It's sickening that people look at the younger generations and prefer to raise them like animals instead of equals.

Also, it's funny how all of the supporters of this law are middle-aged and older.
