Above and beyond the call of duty

11:27 AM Sun, Sep 30, 2007 |

After a tour of duty to a war zone, imagine the activities and entertainments you would look forward to when you returned home. Amazing, I recently met the family of a soldier who helps coordinate other soldiers' funerals, when he himself is not on active duty.
This specialist recently returned to Camp Murray with the 790th Chemical Company of the WA Army National Guard. Before this solider entered the gym for the homecoming ceremony, I spoke with his family off-camera. They told me this particular soldier was returning from his second tour to Iraq (an Army spokesman says the returning 790th Company was responsible for manning security checkpoints and guarding high level prisoners-- including some of Saddam Hussein's close associates). In the interim between his tours, his girlfriend related how (in addition to his other responsibilities) this soldier presented the flag to grieving families at fallen soldiers' funerals.

Undoubtedly, many members of our armed services quietly go above and beyond in compassionate service to others here at home. Unfortunately, they are often not appropriately recognized for their significant contributions.
As this soldier now entered the gym at Camp Murray, I was struck by the sad realization of what continued to lay ahead for him. His stateside duties, tragically, are far from over.
