Listening to the police tape of Senator Larry Craig’s interrogation after his arrest in a Minneapolis airport men’s room offers a fascinating bit of drama. It seems pleading guilty to a crime was the idea of Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport Police Sergeant David Karsnia. Karsnia: You can plead guilty, there'll be a fine, you don't have to explain anything. You pay the fine, you'll be let go ... done! Or you could plead not guilty. You know I can't make these decisions for you. In hindsight, Craig said he regrets not consulting a lawyer or his family before deciding to plead guilty to “disorderly conduct.” He said he did it thinking it would make all this “go away” and he wouldn’t have to appear in court. Perhaps there’s a lesson in this -- to avoid making important decisions under duress. 1 Comments |
