With the recent construction on the I-5 corridor putting transportation at the forefront of people's minds, this was certainly an opportune time for a visual demonstration of how transit choices impact our roads. The Seattle Department of Transportation took pictures (see video) of what 200 commuters look like on city streets depending upon their mode of transportation. Two hundred people configured to take up the same amount of space they would in light rail cars took up about half of one lane in one city block. Two hundred drivers distributed between 175 cars took up all the lanes for nearly two blocks. You can't see the difference in emissions, but the point is made nonetheless. Even when you know the facts, it's amazing how a picture can make all the difference when telling a story (one of the reasons why television can be such a rewarding medium to work in!). |
