What am I doing here? Allen does synchronized swimming - in his clothes

11:20 AM Wed, Aug 29, 2007 |

And what is it about synchronized swimming that addles my brain and makes me do foolish and potentially embarassing stuff?

Those are the questions floating through my waterlogged and clearly malfunctioning mind as I tread water, surrounded by 20 or so synchro swimmers in a local pool. There is plenty of shrieking, giggling and good-natured teaching going on. I'm wearing nose-clips, goggles, a yellow swim cap with Chelsea's name on it and my full reporter suit of dress Khakis, dress shirt and tie. How did I get here?

It all started as a standup tease for a feature story on a couple of aqua-maids who are going to the Olympics. For some reason, and to this day I can only say it seemed like a good idea at the time, I decided to do the standup tease in the pool, wearing my reporter suit, with the camera starting tight and pulling back to reveal the scene. The girls from the Seattle Synchronized Swimming Team were delighted to help. They had a blast. We shot the tease and then, well, there I was, soaking wet, in the pool so it seemed natural to ask them to show me a few moves. And so they did.
Credibility? What credibility? "Yikes, Al," I'm thinking, "YOU'RE A JOURNALIST!"
What the heck though...
Four years ago before the Athens Games I has a few similar "what am I doing here" moments, when former multiple jmedlaist Tracy Ruiz-Conforto took me into the pool and nearly drowned me. Cheerfully, I might add.
Anyway, watch the video for yourself.
And, you can read my story on the swimmers.
