I think of how I would feel if it was one of my grandkids (one of them is this girl's age) and I know I would never recover from the grief. My prayers for this family - I only pray this doesn't tear them apart but keeps them together in love for each of their remaining members.

This little girl should still be alive if he had been deported after his first conviction. Why aren't we deporting the illegal criminals? This family should NOT be suffering!

Do we need another example why immigration laws should be so stringent? And this also yet another example of how sex ofenders cannot be rehabilitated. Once they offend, they should be locked up for life, then we wouldn't have so many cases like these. Horrific. We're praying for you, Zina.

This guy was court ordered to undergo 5 years of rehab for sexual deviancy as a plea deal in his last case (rape of a family member > incest) and I think it just goes to show that these offenders cannot be rehabilitated. People who commit violent and or sex crimes against the most vulnerable -children - should be sentenced to death. Particularly when there is undeniable evidence like DNA. My heart goes out to the family and to anyone else who has lost a child to a crime like this.

My prayers go out to her family. I agree this man should have never been allowed in our country and should have been deported after his first offence. Why do we allow criminals a 2nd chance to cause more pain and devastation? People like him deserve to die and girls like Zina deserve a safe country.

I have an idea: instead of taxpayers footing the bill (defense attorney, jailing, food, etc.) for what this monster has done to one of our children, let's get someone to donate their gun, get someone to volunteer ammo, and have an auction to see who makes the highest bid on getting to be the executioner. We hear all the time Political Leaders blowing smoke about How are Kids are Safe? and how they Promise to do this and to do that to protect our kids, That is total crap, I think that is a horrid thing to lie about too. His nick name is Dang. He's led a somewhat normal life here in Tacoma. I've known him for about 2 year's. He had a girl friend, asian, and her family lived with him and her in a house across from a school. He spoke of his 8 year's in the army? He also was involved in a tow truck company. And went on to military reservation's to pick up broken vehicle's. He also helped some fella flip house's. I heard he had a past involving relative's who live in another state. Never would I think he was capable of doing such a terrible thing.

What I want to know is the names of groups that are already working vigilantly to get our lawmakers to make stricter laws & sentences for the sexual predators of children. And then, I hope to see each and every person blogging on this story amoung others to volunteer their time to help make it happen. We need to be the growing group of masses, not the other way around. "Be a part of the solution or you're just another part of the problem." Seriously...does anyone know groups who are working diligently on this?

However, I believe that we have to take more actions as far as these people go, One starting with having to watch our children more closely! I mean come on, i see it every day people not paying attention to their children,as they trail behind their parents, yet the parents whine and cry when some thing bad happens, you are at fault too, for not being more proactive and watching your child!

I have young daughters and it is humans like this that scare me more than any "animal". Without morals, without humanity, not deserving of the air he breathes, the food he consumes or the pain he has caused.

I think his punishment should be to have an experience that mirrors as closely as possible that of his innocent victim(s). This includes all facets, up to and including his death in a manner that replicates as close as possible the way that he took Zina's life (but more painful if possible.)
We (we own our system) failed to properly "deter" this person before and now we will waste yet more resources defending this waste of life because he has "rights". (Apparently the victim has no rights.) The system has sadly failed again and Zina paid the ultimate price for us allowing this pro-criminal "justice" system to continue unchecked.

This is why I support the death penalty if they are dead they can not slip through any cracks and they can not reoffend. Deporting him just puts other girls at risks and that is just wrong. If I was in his family he would have been hurt after raping his 1/2 sister. Oh hurt this guy

All I can think about is how terrified Zina must have been the moment that this pathetic excuse for a human being grabbed her and drove off with her in his van. How at 9:45 on July 4th I was on the Fremont bridge waiting in excitement for the fireworks show to start, meanwhile in a town away an innocent little girl was about to be tortured and brought to her death. I have two little sisters. This story breaks my heart. I can't believe that people like this walk and live amongst us. Something NEEDS to be done so this STOPS happening again and again =(

I agree with a previous poster. This is not an immigration issue. It's not fair to say the suspect should've been deported so he can do bad things to kids in his home country. He should not be allowed to do this to any kids anywhere. Period. The real problem lies in how wrong the system is currently dealing with sex offenders. I do not understand why Level 1 sex offenders should ever be allowed to live a "normal" life in our communities. They need to be isolated and monitored all the time so they cannot get near children and women. Even had the suspect registered I do not believe it would've save Zina's or other girls' lives. How many people actually go online to see if there are sex offenders in their area? Not to mention they got legs they can to to place where they can have access to kids. The only solution to this I can see is lock them up forever.

It has been proving time and time again that they not only will ro-offend, but in most cases re-offend on an even more aggressive scale. Zina died at the hands of a cruel stranger...one that should NEVER have been back on the streets, let alone in this country at all. WHY do we let these sex offenders go??? Rehabilited? As a mom myself, my heart goes out to Zina's family and all of those who gave their time and effort to search tirelessly for her. The entire community grieves for Zina and many thoughts and prayers are with her and her family...she's in God's hands now.

Iknow someone this has happened to and the person that did it spent over 12 years in prison. He just got out last year and has been in and out of jail at lease 3 times since he got out. 1 time was for domestic violence. Put and keep them away. The only one's I think deserves a chance is a child who has offended. They reason why I say that is because they are kids who may have been a victim themselves who needs counseling and or some kind of help while they are young. Many here mention earlier times when it used to be different as far as children playing out in the street on their own and being safe. So what happened? Well, I say, in the past if he'd done anything to his family member similar to what he has back in 1990, he would have been executed either by the system, or the relatives, or just outraged people, even by inmates in prison. Not anymore. So they get bolder, since they feel protected by the system that gets more and more liberal. Caring for these debris to be alive while for some reason simultaneously disregarding those truly innocent ones who can't protect themselves. So the changes in the system prompt changes in the behavior of criminals. There's always been and will be a percentage of people who are capable of these crimes. Only the prospect of facing devastating consequences (either by the system, or the people - one covering for the other, should one fail) could prevent them from actually going ahead.

Sometimes it seems to be a shame that we use the shield of being a civilized society to protect the rights of an indiviual like this. This poor young lady had her civil rights extremely violated yet in the coming days I am sure we will hear about how this poor creature is mentally ill and that he will not be eligible for the death penalty due to his "Cooporation in showing police where he left the body" As a society we have to decide collectively what we want done with these people. Do we want them locked in prison forever? Do we want them executed? Do we want to give them a lobotomy? Castration? I have my own views. We as a society have to get together, petition legislatures at grass roots level and do what needs doing to protect our children. We as citizens have to understand that Level 1 sex offenders are not even traced on the sex offender web sites. We don't know how many of them there are, or where they are. And in many cases, we can't find them if we have been victims.
This has to change. We need to demand that this information is available!

This has nothing to do with immigration. Washington state is just full of a lot of perverts and the system cares more about their rights than that of our children.

In general sex offense cases are not an immigration issue, however, in this particular case it is. I agree that there is no rehabilitating any sex offender and that if the punishment were stricter there may be less offenses, maybe. But in general I do believe that if an immigrant commits any sort of felony, especially a sex offense, that should terminate their citizenship, if they had one to begin with, and be deported, and in most cases I can guarantee that the punishment for these kinds of crime in most other countries, would be harsher than 3 squares and protection from the general population.

Why did it take 12 hours to issue an Amber alert? The person, van and partial plate number was reported. That information led to him being found. Could he have been found sooner? The police said it was because they thought they had the van. Well how about issuing the alert first unless you are sure you have your perpetrator and know where the child is. I can't fully imagine the pain and horror this family must be feeling right now but perhaps down the road they can take some small degree of comfort knowing that at least someone saw enough to lead to this person so he can be stopped for good.

I dont think that anyone is saying that any particular race is more accountable than another, it is a well known statistic that of all races the white male, takes the cake for serial killings and serial sex offenses. All sex offenders should be severely punished. PERIOD. Rehabilitation does not work, their brains are irreparably dammaged. As far as the immigration thing goes it is just another piece of this particular puzzle, had this person been taken out of the country in 1990 there would be AT LEAST one less unnecessary casualty of a defective system, and defective sicko. If they are a US native, let the US deal with them. I think you have the wrong person. According to his neighbor, there was no mention of him living with a girlfriend or a family. Only that he stood outside and stared at children. I am sure if he had living arrangements as you mentioned, the neighbor would have discussed it. It appears he lived alone.

I think it's time we as citizens took back our streets and refused to put up with the lawmakers, etc. that allow these creeps to live among normal people. How about this...if we have to let these perverts out, imbed a tracking device that cannot be removed and WE tell THEM what areas they can live and work in. Not near families or schools or playgrounds, but some remote area where they can do no harm. If we have the technology to unlock cars from outer space, then we can use a tracking device that sounds an alarm when the pervert leaves his area. Now, after reading update, the suspect may also be involved of another girl, Adre'Anna Jackson, who went missing in Dec '05 and found few months later, in April '06. Yeah the best time to put the Amber Alert out would have been right away. Especially on the 4th of July when more than the normal amount of people were tuned in to news stations to see the fireworks shows, and people were out in the streets late, at the exact time this sicko took her. Duh. Put the alert out first, then follow up on leads. I would hate to think that in the 12 hours that the alert was not out there we could have found her, alive.

My thoughts go out to the family. It is heartbreaking that any family should go through this. A previous poster asked questions about why things are so much different now then before as far as safe kids. Everyone is so afraid of a lawsuit nowdays that nobody is held accountable anymore. Schools can't discipline or follow up on kids anymore because someone might sue the school. Parent's don't make their kids take responsibility for things and all these kids grow up with no concern for anyone but themselves. People don't get in other people's business and report things or protect neighbors for fear of getting sued or having someone retaliate. It's one of the same reasons we have so many gang problems and at risk youth. People need to be held accountable and we all need to instill a sense of community and duty in our kids so that future generations won't have to live in fear. Maybe if the powers that be put the same amount of energy into finding solutions to our own issues as they do other countrie's issues then maybe we would stop some of the violence. People who offend/kill the children should be put to death. Unfortunately, our society holds very little value for the life of a child. For more than 30 years we've condoned murder in the womb of the innocent who have no say. It is no different than the law allows criminals against children to walk the streets for "good behavior" or a technicality in the prosecution. Non US citizen's did not come under the noted laws until 1998. That's when they were passed. Retroactive. Enormous number's of non us citizen's with green card's are being deported each week from detention center's in the US. Cross the US border, return, check's are made. Then, deportation.

Ok, so a previous poster harkened back to the good ol' days when kids could play outside without worry. Yes, there was such a time, but even in those times, devious sexual behavior was happening all around us. The "good ol' days" were the days when people would hide these problems within their families, sweep it under the rug if you will. There are plenty of adults who were victims of this abuse and did not receive any mental health assistance because there was no awareness. Because of programs that are available to victims as well as the perpetrator, there is more awareness. News outlets are covering these stories and making it known there are offenders out there. With the help of the internet, you have the ability to see who are the registered offenders in your area. Knowledge is power. Educate yourself about your neighborhood with the help of materials like this.

I think one of the solutions to problems like these is prevention as they most certainly cannot be rehabbed. All these grown-ups who have had this happen to them need to seek assistance on how to break the cycle. I'm sure some of you reading this have a history within your family of some type of sexual abuse.

My heart definitely goes out to the Linnik family. I was 100% heartbroken when they broke the news yesterday. First off my prayers and condolences goes out the the Linnik family. I have two beautiful daughters of my own (one very close in age to Zina) that I do not allow to walk to school by themselves, ride thier bicycles unsupervised nor go to the local park with thier friends without an adult family member such as Mom or Dad. I cannot imagine the horror and pain that Zina endured before her life was ended by such a cruel and immoral P.O.S., I am angry at the way sex offenders are allowed to live in such close proximities to our children's schools and daycare facilities. I also am confused as to why this dirt bag ( and I refuse to call him a human being) was given such a short sentence from his earlier offenses. I understand the "slippery slope" of judging all to a strict standard. I fear the reactionary BS that follows a high profile case BUT I am also opposed to allowing "these people" to continue to live. Now, question is: How do we strictly define "these people"? To what definition would you want your brother, sister, friend judged? problem is that this guy was "legal" and we failed to "de-legalize" him. My questions are: "Why was he here in the first place"? Did he have needed skills for our industry? Did he have a compelling story? Was he escaping religious torment? Probably not. We just "green carded" him and gave him free rein. The immigration policy that allowed him here is probably to fault and certainly our legal system for failing to accurately prosecute a violent crime in lieu of plea bargaining. From What I know, an immigration act was passed in 1998 that required the immediate deportation of green card holder's if they committed certain act's. Even domestic abuse is a deportable offence. And the law is retroactive in time. Law enforcement does not look for these convicted green card holder's. Even if their is a dui type offense. Only, that I know of, is when these people cross a US border and return to the US are their ID's checked. At which time they are either taken to a detention center, or, if they come back to the US thru an airport, Then they will be visited by immigration officials and placed in detention and processed for deportation. I have read so many comments on this board and there is a lot of public outrage which is understandable. He was allowed into this country because of his mother's marriage and he probably didn't have a criminal record before he got here..they check that big time. He made a plea deal before with his previous sex crime and got probation and treatment, sometimes that works for people sometimes that fails. I wonder how much time passed between his crime and failure to register? Was there a warrant out for him due to that? were they monitoring that? Even if he registered, would that have stopped this? NO. Serial child killers, pedophiles, rapists, etc., do these things because they have triggers and they are unpredictable to anyone but them. Look at what happened to Shasta Groene. Duncan was supposed to register and he took off, stole cars, killed her family and raped her and made her help him dispose of her brother's body. He was from Tacoma - the parkland area. The only one to really blame in this situation is the killer. The parents did what they could to protect their child as I am sure she walked that alley many times without incident. The system is major overloaded to realistically monitor people as they should. Instead of us Washington residents sitting idly by and letting prosecutors make deals for lesser sentences to 'save' the counties money by not having a trial or 'show us where the body is' crap; we should have a say in that! How dumb is that? What is the point of multiple life sentences? There shouldn't be a life sentence unless we had special prisons in Eastern Washington for lifers that were hard labor camps like they have in the south so the prisoners suffer in this life and in the afterlife as well. You can punish a sex offender all you want to but they only feel bad because they got caught, they have an illness that usually cannot be cured. Castration or being able to remove their sexual drive might be the answer but with all of these people that are too compassionate in this world, I doubt it would be allowed. I feel for her family, that loss is so deep for them. I feel for her neighbors that wish they could have stopped this. I feel for the cops that were racing the clock trying to find her. Why did it take so long to connect this guy's van with the plate number and why did they do surveillance on him instead of just rollng up and start questioning the situation? I feel for this guys neighbors that probably think she was in that house alive at some point and they didn't know. The bottom line is that we need to stop prosecutors from making these 'deals', we need to have a choice in the matter if there is sex offenders living in our neighborhood- a community vote to get them out. So what if they did their time? If you are going to put labels on them 'most likely to re offend' then why should we sit around and wait for that to most likely happen in our neighborhood? Take some of the tax dollars and make a housing project for sex offenders with on site psychologists and group meetings that they have to live in after leaving a half way house instead of totally releasing them to the public. Get stiffer sentences for these crimes, whatever it takes. Stop putting them in prison sections with other sex offenders, put them in general population...they put them in general neighborhoods when they are out! I raised three kids and my oldest is a girl. I taught her to scream, kick, bite and fight and run like hell if she was bothered. We should teach our kids in school from first grade how to do that to keep them safe. Teach them to scream their name and such. I know that is what Zina did but I am sure it would save some kids. This world is full of evil people and bad things happen to good people every day, it just sucks when it is in your back yard. I at this point just get upset that my tax dollars, since we are the highest taxed state in the nation, go to pay for these criminals' food and such and they get to sit on their asses and just exist. Our prison system is too soft and our laws are too lenient, look at how many times you can get a DUI before you really get into trouble.
