Sad news overnight here in Tacoma. Zina Linnik's body has been found, and police are not saying much.
We know, as evidenced by your viewer blog postings, you care about this story.
It's a story which tugs at every parent's heartstrings. This little girl was just playing outside her home, when some maniac came through the alley and took her. I think a lot of people can sympathize with the Linnik family.
We're trying to find out more, as fast as we can. But it's not easy.
At 8:30 this morning, I'm live on air, and my phone rings. It's Tacoma Police Public Information Officer Mark Fulghum...
I toss to my taped piece, and answer the phone.
"Mark, It's Chris. When is the press conference?"
"11:30."
"Where is the body?"
"11:30."
"Is he (the person of interest) a suspect?"
"11:30."
"How did this all come together?"
"11:30."
"Anything else you can say?"
"It'll all be revealed at 11:30."
Seconds later, we're live.
Folks, we're trying. Hopefullly, we'll get plenty of answers at 11:30.
This is a somber story, which promises to have plenty of different angles to it.
I think this maniac guy should stop killing people because it is not cool i think this guy should go to jail and NEVER be let out.
I think that all in all the police did a wonderful job putting their all into finding Zina. However I do believe that had the Amber Alert been put out immediately, because so many people were tuned into the news stations and so many were out watching fire works, there may have been a chance that we could have intervened before her brutal death. I also believe that the "person if interest" should have been deported after his first sex crime conviction which should be standard for all immigrants.
I am sad about the loss of Zina - I am also angry these sex offenders should not be allowed to walk the streets! It is time the community and Washington residents send the message that enough is enough and demand laws to keep these predators off the street and in jails where they belong. Allowing convicted sex offenders a chance to live within the community continues to place innoncent women and children in danger of becoming victims.
The Tacoma police did a really great job on trying to find Zina but she needed help sooner. Ii think that the amber alert should have gone out as soon as as they could. Once the story was on the news about Zina missing i am preatty sure that everyone was worried about finding her and when she was going to be found safe. I am only 18 but i found myself glued to the tv whenever the story about Zina came out. I am sadened by the fact that she was found dead because i was really praying for her to be found alive. I hope this never happens to am other family.
I bursted into tears when I heared that her body was found. I am Ukrainian myself and I am so sad for the family! Imagine moving to US, hardly speaking any English and having your daugther kidnapped and then murdered! I pray that God gives her family strength.
Who is responsible for sex offenders not registering? This is an example of our current system requiring much more attention as it has dramatically failed. In my opinion, our community leaders should take immediate actions and not let this slip a way as this News become old. I assume parents can more relate to the pain of Zina's family and it is responsibility of each individual parent to apply pressure on our local government to pass new laws and get this matter under control. Let's not wait to have another victim.
It is common knowledge that sex predators cannot be cured of their urges. Why are any of them allowed to roam free? Why are illegal immigrants, especially those who have also committed other crimes, be allowed to remain in America, while we continue to pay for their social services? I realize big business wants these illegals here to help lower wages and increase profit margins, but when will we figure out the other costs aren't worth it to those of us who are legal citizens? Wake up America! Be aware that many illegal "immigrants" (a misnomer) are illegal because their criminal past won't allow them to become citizens through legal channels.
I think the main prolem is not whether he is an immigrant or a citizen. The main issue is whether sex offenders should walk free in our streets. Also, the law says all sex offenders should be registered with the county they live in. Some one should be in charge of following the sex offenders where they live and make sure they are registered.
I agree with the poster who said that all of us that are parents should unite and demand tougher laws for sex offenders. I hate the fact that I cannot let my child be out without my supervision even for a minute. We are paying too high of a price for these people to have a second chance. Bottom line, this could have been prevented.
I busted into tears when I hearted that her body was found. I am Ukrainian myself and I am so sad for the family! And know this family its blessing my ankle and my dad knows them . I will pray God for them
I am very sorry for the Linnick family! I grew up in Ukranian family and I know how we are united all together. I pray for them in my prayers that God gives them strenght. I never lost my hope i hoped that she will return home alive until i heard that terrible news. It's very breking news specialy for her parents, brothers and sisters. And of course for us. I check the news three to four times a day and hoped she is found. Only God can help and give strenght to those who grifing!
Washington State failed this little girl on all counts. First by not deporting this guy and second on their inaction. Her life might have been saved if they would have issued an Amber Alert right away. Someone should be held accountable.
I have been saddened by this story in a very special way...I knew what the outcome would be in thias case and it has haunted me from the beginning...my heart goes out to her family and friends
So the police say they ran the license check on the 6th and that's when it all began to unwind. Supposedly, the father gave them the van description and license info right after the abduction happened on the 4th. Why did it take them so long to do the check? Could she have been saved if the police acted right away?
This is a very sad ending to this horrific crime. Should the Amber Alert have been issued earlier? Maybe, but if the police thought they already had the guy (the first person of interest the questioned), there wouldn't have been much need.
--The "person if interest" should have been deported after his first sex crime conviction which should be standard for all immigrants. --
Well, okay Jennifer, but what about all of the sex offenders who live in this country all of the time? Not not all sex offenders are people here from other countries either legally or illegally. Unfortunately we don't just have an island that we can ship them off to.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. This or that should have been done. The police should have done this or that. The fact of the matter is that they are human just like the rest of us, and they do the best they can at that particular moment. I can't even imagine what it must be like to work on a case like that. I applaud them for the great work that they do!
May Zina and her family find peace and comfort in God!
Court need to release this men to the public Judjement.
I really think people like this should have the same fate as their victims. Eye for an eye. This person does not deserve to walk this earth for another day. I have never paid more attention to an Amber Alert in my life. It is terrifying to think that there are actually people walking these streets that are capable of these gruesome things. This should have never happened to this little girl or anyone for that matter. It is time for the state to step up and realize that a predator will always be a predator whether it is a T-Rex or a convicted sex offender.
I am not ready to analyse or think about this yet. Right now, let me just mourn.
May God give her family strength and whatever peace is possible at this time.
My heart aches for the family of this beautiful young girl. This is the ultimate trajedy. It also tugs at my heart to see our community CRITICISE the incredible work, love and attention to every detail that our local police department gave to try to bring this precious child home safely. There are always those people who love to sit back and find fault in the efforts and attempts of those actively involved in solving these things. It seems as those that complain the loudest sit the quietest and do nothing. The Tacoma P.D. deserves a huge thank you and heartfelt praise for the very difficult job that they tackled with their heart and soul. My deepest prayers are with the family, friends, community and police department who grew to love this gorgeous child with all of their heart. May Christ be with them all.
The T.Police Bungled the Amber alert from the beginning and should be held accountable. In cases like this, you always err on the side of caution and that means immediate amber alert status.
I am a Romanian/American and can feel with the Ukrainian community since they border us.
It's been posted before, and I have to affirm: SEX Offenders are not curable. Anyone capable of committing such crimes, one time only should never have a second chance at life-- they are to be executed and as a result, it would spare society a whole lot of grief.
When are we going to start getting serious in this country about this problem -- Jessica's law needs to be passed everywhere (at a minimum) and my personal twist: after they have been found guilty, immediately take them out back and hang them! – thanks Gabe G.
The case of little Zina Linnik has sickened me beyond words. "The System" let Zina and her family down. How could Immigration simply have "missed" this illegal immigrant/felon? The Tacoma Police Department's actions are unconscionable. Zina's family immediately told them at which house they had seen the van. Did they think the family was making up the abduction? Why did it take them 12 hours to issue the Amber Alert or question the “friends” of the abductor? They cited "language barriers" as a factor in their initial lateness in getting on the case. This is disgusting to hear. THIS MONSTER’S “FRIENDS” SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES! THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT LEADING POLICE TO HIM IMMEDIATELY! If Zina's family weren't immigrants with limited English skills, living in a ghetto neighborhood, things would have been different. I am a diehard liberal, but I believe that any proven attack of this nature against children should result in a fast-tracked death penalty. Stop making excuses for these monsters! Stop coddling or trying to "rehabilitate" them. Stop letting them out among our children! This case should mobilize the Russian/Ukrainian immigrant community to become a political force in this country.
I, as everyone, have found this story heartbreaking. I also feared from the first -- when her father had heard her scream as she disappeared that it would have a horrible outcome --and, then especially when hearing about undergarments found, and a sex offender link....I have small children, as well as teens, and can't imagine their anguish. As far as second guessing on the Amber Alert - The police are human and did everything as best they could in the given moment as things developed I believe, and I'm sure will look at if anything could be done differently in a future case -- because the horrible reality is there will be a future case. They are many many sex offenders...and no one knows if an earlier Alert would have made any difference. But their efforts did catch the guy -- and maybe some other unsolved cases will be resolved. And,this man, at least, won't have any future victims. I hope the Linnik family can know how much people care -- even strangers -- about what they are having to go through.
First, I would like to express how very sorry I am to hear about the Linnik's loss at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at all times. I pray that god will give you all the strength that you'll need to get through these hard times and grief that your experiencing right now and that in time it will get easier with each day. I also pray that this horrible man that did this to the Linnik's daughter get's everything he deserves and then some, because what he did was sick, inhumane, and not to mention very wrong. I am very saddened by this tragedy. I am very saddened for the family of this little girl and my heart goes out to you all. Take care and God Bless You All.
I want to go to the funeral. Does anyone know where it's going to be and what time?
Thanks!

No excuses on the Amber Alert! Doing their "best" isn't enough. Our police are held to a higher accountability because our lives are in their hands. It doesn't matter that they "thought" they knew who it was. An Amber Alert should always be issued immediately no matter what, whether they think it's a runaway or if they know who it was. It is never a waste of time to issue an alert that might save a child. It's time to stop taking chances with our children! We could have saved this child with an Amber Alert right away because we had the description of the van and part of the license plate.
How many more children do we stand to have mamed, tortured and/or murdered?
Sex offenders have MORE rights than their victims!
ALL sexual predators, especially pedophiles, should be:
1. REQUIRED to register as sex offenders and
2. returned to the slammer for failing to do so or after any additional minor offences.
3. ANY sex predator, especially pedophile, with any VIOLENT crime such as rape etc., should be locked away for life - REHAB for them is BULLSHIT.
4. MURDER of a child should equal a death sentence - make it the same as slaying of a police officer.
5. PUNISH those who do not implement the law - the "person of interest" was not deported when he was supposed to be by law.
Not implementing the above means we ALL support the criminal and NOT the VICTIM.
readers should note how LITTLE coverage this got outside of Tacoma. As a resident of Idaho i can tell you it got little coverage on Idaho TV or on Northwest News. consider that Idaho and the notorious Duncan case on trial right now.
also not well covered on cable. i have heard no end of coverage about lisa stebbenick, whose body was found, but nothing on this case.
I am furious that this man will have to sit in prison for the rest of his life, and my taxes have to pay for this sick man to be alive. The Washington State Laws are too lenient, in other countries he would not be sitting in prison alive.
The justice system is confused.
I sure hope that the death penalty will be reconsidered, for Terapon Adhahn.
His death would be more humane, than what he did to Zina.
He deserves the death penalty. Along with about a million other inmates, that our taxes pay for them to stay in crowded prison cells.
I am so angry at our judicial system, and Terapon is lucky it wasn't my child he did this to.
He wouldn't even go to trial.
I can't believe you will allow him to live, after what he just did. I am shocked.
Now give this sick man the death penalty! No more wasted time.
This is a crime against all of us.
The city of Tacoma dumps all of its criminals in the poor neighborhoods of Hilltop and the east-side.
Check out the difference between North 12th at Yakima and Hilltop or the east-side.
I wonder if the Tacoma Police would have reacted differently had they responded to North 12th and Yakima?
