Remember Michael Schreck, the Issaquah jogger who says he fell into a ravine and stayed unconscious for three days, only to return home on his own apparently uninjured? The last time this got mentioned on the blog, the post collected more than 100 comments, most from people incredulous about his story. Now he's sent a letter and $1,000 donation to the searchers, thanking them for their efforts and trying to explain what happened. It says in part, "I did not do this on purpose and was not trying not to be found. Please do not feel that your efforts were wasted. I was unconscious or in a state of amnesia. I am so grateful to you all for your whole-hearted efforts." 45 Comments |
What a crock. Something else is going on with this person.
I think that that is great that he is showing is appreciation to the rescuers. He seems truly sincere. I am glad he made it home safe! We all know that sometimes knocks on the head can be way more serious than they appear!
Ok, so now this guy supposedly suffered amnesia from his "supposed " being knocked out?
Gimmie a break, at what point is this guy going to stop trying to bullshit his way out of the truth?
This story just needs to be busted wide open and the truth and nothing but the truth needs to be revealed.
This guy is so full of shit and once again, it appears that he is compunding lies with lies.... i am really glad i don't know this guy personally or i would make him tell the truth in front of every t.v. camera posible.
Fess up Mr Scherck !!!!! was that piece of ass you got over the weekend worth it?
Is this guy for real? Excuses are like assholes, and everybody's got one. He seems to have multiple. I hope that piece of ass you got was worth all the crying your "in denial" wife did on t.v. I wouldn't be surprised if she was somehow in on the whole thing.
This is more than suspicious. He's outright lying and I hope it doesn't affect the searches of future "genuine" missing persons.
Next time he turns up missing, send search team up his secretary's skirt.
Did he even bother to get his head checked out at a hospital? You'd think he would have had a major bruise or bump. I never heard anything about that. I smell something fishy!
Wouldn't the leaves have deteriorated during the winter? He was conscious yet able to roll under a log for days? The walking home thing also made no sense plus now the added part of "not sleeping for 2-3 weeks" smells fishy. $1000 is not enough.
THIS IS VERY FISHY!!! SOMETHING IS GOING ON. I JUST HOPE SHE WAS WORTH IT. OH, MAYBE IT WAS A HE.
well what does his girlfreind or wife have to say about this???? guess we will find out in devorce court ,, he is a big fat lier...
This man needs to step up to the plate and tell us the truth. He is donating the money because he thinks it will soften us up and feel sorry for him. The bill for that search amounted into thousands of dollors. Michael Schreck you are not telling the truth and everyone knows it, this guy needs to grow up. When I go to my property for the weekend I come back with scratches, bug bites etc. He sleeps under a log and walks out with nothing.. Lier
Is the money his way of trying to throw the police off his trail? I really think this is fishy has anyone check out the log he rolled under. Anybody who has been hiking can tell you there are no leaves right now!
LOL!!!
LOL!!!...yeah,right...
It's a amazing story maybe they can make a made for T.V. movie out of it, Hits his head lives under a log for 3 days, recovers and finds his way home with no problem.. Oh I forgot not a scracth according to the Sheriff's Department. He should of thrown in he fought off cougars and bears also, hahahahah
Columbus the Bear and Michael Schreck should think about hibernating together next winter.. They can go find that log and leaves and cuddle up together.. At least the Bear would tell the truth..
I thought this was a lie from DAY ONE. Amnesia and THEN he remembers his way home? DEHYDRATED but manages to walk all the way home and THEN collapse? I bet he was in Vegas with the Runaway Bride. I hope his wife kicks his lying amnesiarse to the curb.
Ya right! Michael's story is a BIG FAT joke! I almost feel sorry for him....hmm....no actually I don't...I feel sorry for his WIFE! He should be ashamed of himself!
OK I have had a head injury that caused me to blackout. I came to within 30 seconds of the head injury, had an obvious lump for 3 days and a massive headache for a little over 2 months.
I know someone who took a harder blow to the head than I did, she was unconscious for less than 15 minutes and had bruising across the face that lasted about a week.
Where are my anecdotes leading? Neither of us believe this guy is telling the truth either. His story does not match up with a concussion. For it to have knocked him out for 3 days he would have had more visible injuries and would certainly not have been able to find his way home.
Add in the $1000 of guilt money and it equals something fishy in the woods.
I'm sure he meant to date his letter May 27 (and not MARCH 27 which would mean he wrote the letter two months before his mishap).
The story does seem fishy. I wonder why nobody has come foward to say they saw a man hitchkiking on 900 that night. I have walked 900 myself many times and I know that not many people will stop for anyone. Also where did he get the strength to walk all that way home after his ordeal? He should come forward and explain what happened on camera to the news. I find it very suspicious that he continues to hide his face. If a man had nothing to hide he would come out from jiding and tell his story.
man hitchkiking on 900, hmmmmmmmmmmm why did he not flag people down with his arms, someone would of stopped or used there cell phone to call 911. Most everyone carries a cell phone now days.. To many Q's in this story untold. Crawls out from under a log and tries to hitchhike home, seems far fetched
whatEVER, Schreck. Give it up. You should have gone with the abducted by aliens story. MUCH more believable.
I thought it was interesting how on the news your wife was sooooo calm and was "sure" you were alive, but "probably unconscious somewhere." THEN you come home and SURE ENOUGH! - - you were unconscious. I hope you know the whole of Seattle really loathes you.
OH! And I also LOVE the part where he finds his way home in the midddle of the night. ON FOOT!! BuhwaaHaaaaaaaaa! That's real TV movie stuff right there!! : )
Well, I am sure he knows he did wrong and probably didn't realize his "game" would be up as soon as it was. I don't really care what he was doing or where he was -- he needs to come clean for his family's sake and I wish them well during that process.
I have spent many years trail running at Cougar and he decribed the appropriate route he took with all the right names - but I also spent 2 hours searching in all the deepest ravines on Monday. In fact I was even at Red Town Trailhead on that Friday am, of course only saw the usual 6-8 vehicles between 9-10am. I did call the KC Police to indicate that my tiregate was ajar on my Pathfinder, like someone tried to get in the back. So I was thinking foul play and they hauled him off - I mean the dogs and Choppers with bodyheat sensors would have picked him up. I have taken many spills on the trail and now even wear a bike helmet, so I don't get anymore head injuries or broken bones. That doesn't lessen the nicks, dings and bruises that I have - I usually go down at least once each time out. He seemed experienced enough to know the trails - but like the other posts, it is hard to believe he did not die from hypothermia. I also have been in that situation and it spirals out of your control - so, good for him if it's true. And, he is alive to run another day. But, come on!
Okay, so the guy's stories don't make any sense. But my question is this: If you screwed up and were "caught" doing something you were not supposed to, why do you feel the need to make the news AGAIN with the sorry excuses? Why not just slink into the corner and disappear out of everyone's view, and deal with whatever is really going on. News is not a liar telling more lies. People risked their lives for this man. Leave the story at that.
Oh what a tangle web we weave............ what happened? Schreck knows. I have been in the medical field for over 15 years and ya a knock on the head can do a lot. Hypothermia can too. Several days on the cold ground? Can't get my bearings? Don't remember anything? Had any life left to walk home? Don't thank the rescure staff in guilt. Make a donation so that the next time there will be an extra crew to respond to a real emergency and make a difference. Don't waste this valuable resource on personal issues. Others may need it!!!
The only way Michael can make this right is to go for a hike, unprepared and head for the summit of Mt. Rainer. When rescuers recover his frozen body in a few days we'll call it even.
What a noble thing to do! It's a shame the folks in here cannot respect a man who obviously suffered a near death experience on a trail.
PS-Can anyone here vouch for me this weekend? I need to hook up with my office assistant and want to keep the wife in the dark- thanks!
If this a load of crap like it sounds, he will get whats coming to him. Your sins ALWAYS find you out. I do like the comment from jt about him and Columbus the bear. Good one!
Give me a break, what a crock, He's looking for publicity or to hide something. Surprised he's not telling his wife or girlfriend or boyfriend or both he was abducted by aliens and they stuck probs in his belly button and did all sorts of strange things to him, or he thought it would be a wonderful story to make up and he could get on the Today Show or Oprah because both shows seem to love to have moron's like him on.

I'd like an explanation as to why the Sheriffs Dept. accepted this story at face value. Do they know something we don't? Or do they feel it's not worth spending more resources determining the truth. If this really happened, don't you think he'd be having a MRI test or the like? I actually know someone who blacked out -slept- in a library for 10 hours or so and awoke in the middle of the night, locked in, due to a brain tumor. So it's possible he's not up to no good. But, after the money the public spent searching for him, I think he owes us the WHOLE truth, what ever it is. Without that, yeah, it's a crock.
I hope none of you are never in a position where something YOU'VE done is held up to the public to be smugly judged by nasty, profane, mean-spirited, hateful people.
In reading these comments again, I'm getting a real sense of "Thou dost protest too much." I'm thinking that anyone capable of generating this much venom and hatred probably has plenty of skeletons in their own closet.
Jack or do you go by Jakie. Come on grow some nuts man or boobs. Is your skeleton in your closet saying something to you? Come on fess up. What'd you do Jack? This guy is still a hot topic for a reason. Add all the facts up and really try to picture all of this happening and now for the first time Amnesia that throws a hole knew curve ball for all of us to gossip about. He had running shorts on (short shorts
KEN SCHRAM FROM ANOTHER CERTIAN STATION DOESN'T BELIEVE, AND EVEN DID AN ARTICLE ON IT. HE'S NOT STUPID.
KEEP THE COMMENTS ROLLING HE'LL TALK!!!!!!
I think this group needs to lighten up- the man is entitled to some privacy. He has made the effort to settle the debt with the county, why can't you all move on?
PS- Any recommendations for a cheap motel in the issaquah area? My boyfriend usually picks up the tab, but he recently paid a $1,000 fine or something- so it's my turn.
Well, i agree we need to move on.. but a letter two weeks later, rather an immediate 'Thank You' statement + a $1,000 check (is that truly the cost of the search, involving locals, police, etc.). Well, if I really had fallen, knocked unconscious for 3 days and I knew people were wondering whether I was speaking the truth, I would have come out much sooner.. within 2-3 days of returning home. And I would not offer a check, as you cannot attach a value to what people did out of real concern for a missing man, not for any form of reimbursement.
He's really a FBI agent or works for Bush. He was on a secret feild mission forgot to tell his wife and boom he's gone. Now the sheriff's are involved and quite embarrassed with how to explain a undercover law man was really out under cover... ohhhh boy the story thickens. How many people have ever given Money back to something that is already paid for by themselves. Don't we pay for law enforcement. Search and rescue (TAXES) Washington state is loaded with money. All your Property taxes added up, gas tax, ect. We didn't need the $1000.00 dollars. What we needed was a very detailed answer. Why? because When the story first hit the air alot of us thought wow this is happening in our back yard. POOR GUY I hope he's O.k. People worry and take things personal even though they don't have a realtionship with the individual or event. Just like an arson, or kidnapping. We read and think about ourselves and our families and could that happen to me. But when things come up and sound fake we deal with the saddness and the thought of that happening to someone so close to where we all live we get emotional and tied up in the facts and what the real story is.
COME ON MAN TELL US WHAT REALLY HAPPENED I'LL GIVE YOU A $1000.00 DOLLARS. PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE TELL US. FOR THE LOVE OF MISQUITO BITES PLEASE. WITH BUMPS AND BRUISES ON TOP, COVERED IN LEAVES!
I would think all of you have something better to do than write bad things about someone regardless of what happened.
Wow. How vicious you all can be hiding behind your computers. Talk about mob mentality. Have we really sunk this far as a community that all anyone can do is immediately attack and disbelieve? Sad commentary, indeed.
Shame on all of you. Hope none of you ever have an accident in the woods of the Pacific Northwest.
hahaha! This guy is having an affair. Straight up.
To Dawn:
Well, I for one am not hiding out behind my computer. If this guy wants to meet me at Starbucks and look me straight in the eye and tell me this bunch of garbage over a latte he can be my guest.
Also, if I do have an accident in the woods of the Pacific Northwest (as you kindly are hoping I do not and thank you) I'm going to come out of it actually looking like I had an accident.
To anyone who calls me mean-spirited I just want to say that if this same thing happened to me I would think people were insane if they *didn't* question it. I primarily feel this way because if I told a story like this and actually believed myself I'd demand to be committed.
Hmm, I passed/got knocked out running, woke up an amnesiac, crawled under a log, hid under some leaves, recovered and remembered how to get home scratch free. Oh, wait, it's sort of all a blur. Here's some dough for your trouble.
I hope people would CARE for me enough to be like, "Okay, Alica, WTF kind of story is that?"
Truthfully, it doesn't really matter to me if the "truth" comes out or not. Maybe it is the truth but it isn't an unreasonable or "mean" person who would question it. It's an unreasonable person who takes that kind of drivel at face value.
I agree with people above who question why sheriffs took it for what it was. My concern and my purpose for writing this is that such blatantly suspicious activity is passed off like this when there were great costs associated with looking for this gentleman.
What happened to forgive and forget? And honestly it's none of anyones business if he's having an affair, that's between his wife and him. And who is anyone to stand in judgement, no one was there to testify to what really happened. Just pray for him and his family.
