Airing killer's rant tough call for newsrooms

6:19 PM Wed, Apr 18, 2007 |

A package arrived in New York City this morning that created a sobering choice for NBC News and its affiliate newsrooms around the country including KING. The walk between covering a story that lends some insight into the motives of a twisted killer and offering that same killer a chance to reach out from the grave and victimize again by forcing us to listen to his incoherent rant is a difficult one.
I know some will think that we’ve merely glorified a murderer. But I hope you will all know that the goal in sifting through the volume of material received was to find any insight to help answer the question: Why. Why did he do it? What switch went off in his head to cause this? Why are these people dead?
I kept asking if it were my son or daughter killed how would I feel about seeing this? I’d hate it, but I would still want an answer to why. I hope you know that both NBC News and KING TV are keenly sensitive to the shock and grief that has consumed all of us in this tragedy, and that our journalistic goal was to try to help us all understand why any of this happened.

I was very dissapointed in your decision to air that murderer's video. What a horrible way to support those families that are greiving. You just put yourself in the same class as him. It didn't "help answer the question why he did it". Don't you get it? You allowed him to glorify himself. That disgusts me. You just wanted to put it on the air (and make it available to the other networks) to say you got the scoop. By putting it on the air, you become part of why people do these things. Just because the Constitution gives you the freedom of free speech, you still have to be responsible and THINK first if you should. Once you do, it's too late to take it back. After 20 years, here's another scoop for you. I am no longer a viewer of King.

It is obvious that the V-tech murderer wanted to be viewed on the national news after the massacre. You are giving him exactly what he wanted.
It's completely irresponsible and disgusting that you are airing his video in an obvious attempt to boost your ratings. Acknowledging that it may glorify him and that you want to be sensitive to the victims prior to showing the video does not make it OKAY.
Now other aspiring mass murderers out there know exactly how to get the recognition that they want. You have endangered others by this reckless self serving behavior.
As to your decision to air it to answer "why" this happened is extremely weak. This "why" could have been addressed without airing the video. If the families wanted to watch it they could have been offered access.
I will never again watch anything on NBC.

Our family is so disturbed that you would actually release these photos under the guise of providing up to date coverage of the VT killer. We consider ourselves "non-activist" average Americans. We just witnessed 10 minutes of your highest profile Anchors try to spin releasing this information as a responsibility when in reality it is a choice. You would have garnered much more respect (and taken a higher moral road) by announcing a decision to not release this sick individuals message. You have completed his mission to millions. And when it's not being released via NBC...you're still receiving credit by NBC logo embedded on the other networks covering this.

We cannot imagine how the families who have lost children, the families of Virginia Tech along with the Korean Nation must feel about what you have done.

This is everything that is wrong with media today. We, until now, have always depended NBC for our local and national news. We are completely repulsed by your actions and lame excuses to justify covering (i.e. promoting) this. To hear your anchors justify that they all have kids and what a hard decision this was for NBC is absolutely pathetic.

This glorifies Columbine and Killers like this.

Past Loyal Viewers.

I think releasing this video is very important. first of all, it shows the guy was a psycho bent on killing long before it actually happened. It was well thought out and it would have been next to impossible to stop. Next, it shows that the guy, not the guns or gun laws are to blame. He would have killed even if he needed to use an automobile on a busy sidewalk. Finally, it releives all blame from the University President and chief of Police. The SOB committed 2 murders and walked (drove) away. Then he started back up after possibly filming the video, taking pictures and sending them away. 2 total seperate crimes. It could have been the dining hall, or the drill field the next day (or week). There is no way they could have protected the population. No matter where they sent the students if they had closed the campus, he would have found a group and finished the job. Bravo NBC.

It's a good decision. Seeing for myself just how crazy this guy was DID help me better understand this horrible event.

Maybe if we didn't show video of war it would go away. Perhaps if the networks didn't show video of the twin towers falling we wouldn't have been terrified. Get real people. This is all part of the complete story. We should see it. By the way do you suppose this goofball knew that when he killed all those innocent people he would get publicity? Perhaps we shouldn't expect KING or NBC to cover the shooting either. That way they won't be doing what the killer wanted.

To the above.
WE can see how this guy is crazy, but another like minded crazy person will only relate to it.
I believe the issue of understanding the "why" could have been delt with description and talking about the cause.. which is obviously mental illness.
The guy mailed the video to NBC.. uhh.. think he figured on publicit?? And you know what?? He was correct!!
Comparison of video of war I don't understand where that's going.. But Im sure there is some nut out there planning his video right now. The future will tell and I hope I am wrong about that.

I originally sent an email expressing my chagrin at the airing of the Cho Seung-Hui video. Having read the posted blogs, I guess I now have a different view. I believe that, historically, much of the finger pointing and law creation done after things such as 9-11, Columbine, etc., was useless. It’s not the legislation of firearms or campus access that works, but the increased sensitivity of each of us, as well authorities that is needed. A recent Reader’s Digest column talks about ‘Zero Tolerance’ in schools for unacceptable behavior. It’s meant to protect our kids from other’s who would come on campus with weapons, drugs or unacceptable behavior. However, the article’s argument is that the application has gone too far. We’ve now expelling grade school children for ‘sexual harassment’ because a first grader ran up and gave a peck on the cheek of a girl that he admires. When I did that, 40+ years ago, I was laughed at, but later got a girl friend. Now we expel children for that. In that line of thought, I now agree that NBC and King 5 news did exactly what their integrity calls them to do. Expose the WHOLE story so that we, the public and victims, can realize that the problem is NOT the laws, the administration, police or school authorities, it’s OUR OWN tendency to refuse to face reality.
I agree… Bravo King 5 for making the appropriate, difficult decision.

I am a retired school teacher who worked with severely disturbed students for many years. The actions taken by Cho-Seung-Hui make all of us sad. Angry and isolated students can be a very real and serious threat to themselves and society. We all must take some responsibility for what happened. We must find ways to pay attention to and identify their calls for help (however strange they may seem to us) before they have to show us how desperate they are.

At least the networks are dialing back the attention being given to the video and diatribe. We don't need to see any more of this. What we could use is a national dialogue about the easy access to automatic firearms. There's no rational need for the general population to purchase these firearms.

Oh one other thing... dial back the carnival color palette and flying animation. We get you have HD, how about a more sophisticated touch? It's annoying and distracting. Reminds me of when affiliates got a video toaster. Yuk.

This is becoming very diluted.. The point of contention I have with it is that other sick individuals will be inspired by his success at national recognition and do the same. We don't need to inspire sick people in this way.
I don't think we will be shouting "bravo! bravo!" if this is repeated in the same manner. It's NOT a matter of thinking that not showing it will make it not happen or go away.. it's a matter of showing it giving the potential of making it happening MORE.
They did this for the ratings.. which equals $$$.. That's it. If you believe there was some noble reasoning behind it your being fooled.

The content in the videos received by NBC would have been better served just turning them over to the FBI and letting them sort out the answers rather than showing them to the whole world and expecting some answer or good from them. We as a whole are not qualified to reap the answers from watching these things. It only makes people feel ill watching them. And, if it doesn't, then you have a problem. If you want to help stop these tragedies, stop making martyrs out of the bad guys. To me, it’s no different than drip-feeding an alcoholic. It’s okay to report the bad news, just don’t glorify it.

As a family member of a murder victim, I can attest that it is impossible to imagine the physical and mental consequences that torture you in the days weeks and months after a loved one is taken away in vain. WHY seems to turn into an obsession that stays permanently tatood to the brain, even in your sleep. While it is impossible to understand the motive or reasoning they were taken because we are not murderers, our hearts cannot process our loved ones being stolen from us without a reason. I understand how it could be misconstrewed for our society to think that airing this animal was disrespectful to the family of the victims, they may find some answers in the tape made by the killer, even if the only answer is to know that he was evil and that their loved ones did nothing to antagonize this person or situation. Then they just may stop torturing themselves with imagining what was going through his head. Unfortunately he was a piece of the puzzel that they deserve to have the answers to. Because when a loved one is killed and we are often left behind with trauma and emotional issues. They are often left with PTSD and are no longer able to trust accept or understand certain situations in the same way as others. I can say if I was in the situation where a loved one was killed, having been through a famly member being murdered, I have to say I would not want anyone making the decisions for me regarding what I saw or heard. I understand that our society is only wanting to protect the loved ones left behind, unfortunatlyl there isn't much to protect anymore. Just understand.
