Worried moments for niece after shootings Bookmark and Share

4:35 PM Tue, Apr 17, 2007 |

I have a niece who is a senior at Virginia Tech. The morning of the mass shooting, my family's worry was whether she was safe. So my son (who had visited his cousin on the Blacksburg campus just two months ago) text messaged her and got a reply from her.
What a relief.
I then found out my sister had talked with her daughter that morning after the reports of the first shooting in a residence hall. When the news broke about killings across campus two hours later, my sister tried to phone her daughter again. She couldn't get through, so a bit of panic ensued. How'd she find out her daughter was safe? They contacted their son in West Virginia with the order, "text message your sister!" He did. She replied. She was safe.
We, as a society, communicate is so many different ways these days. It was a good thing in this case.
