When the BREAKING NEWS comes to you... Bookmark and Share

99.9% of the time, we go the breaking news scene. Wednesday, it came to us.

We had just finished our 6:30 'liveshot' on a fatal fire at an Everett townhome. The fire happened on Monday afternoon, and was extinguished a short time later. It had recently been declared an arson, and that's why we were there.

After, the liveshot, I walked back to our news car to grab a computer, turned around, and had to pinch myself. The building was on fire AGAIN, and no one was around!

Was I hallucinating? I'd been up since 2:15 in the morning, and had just finished my fourth live shot of the morning. I ran to the fire station across the street. I saw a firefighter and shouted, 'What the heck is going on?' 'I don't know!' he shouted back.

I scrambled over to our live truck to find our truck tech Ryan Gamradt, and photographer Susie Rudloff. I pounded on the door, "It's on fire again!" They looked at me like I was kidding.

We were on the air just a couple minutes later. The firefighters moved across the street and starting pouring as much water as they possibly could on the building. They did a great job protecting nearby trees, and buildings, and keeping the fire from spreading. Snohomish County Sheriff's Deputies arrived a few minutes later and started looking for witnesses, or possible suspects. They stood next to us, and heard our report as you did. The entire time, as we're adlibbing about the blaze, I'm thinking 'I hope there is no one inside'. There was an SUV and Truck parked in the lot next door.

The whole story is strange. Firefighters told me it is rare, but possible, for a fire to re-ignite after they believe it is extinguished. But this was suspicious, because it happened in the same spot, 36 HOURS after the other one, and there was no smoke prior to the blaze.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in this case. But whatever may have been left of the crime scene is now gone. Fire Marshals may wonder where to go from here, but the nearby homeowners and renters are wondering whether they have anything to fear.

UPDATE:

Investigators now believe the first fire was set by the victim. They believe the 28-year-woman doused gasoline on herself in a suicide attempt, and died the following day.

They also believe, contrary to suspicions at the scene, that the second fire was started by a flaming ember. It is unusual for that to happen after a blaze is 'extinguished'.

As Diana Hefley writes in today's Everett Herald:

'"It is uncommon it would be this long before something flared up again," (Fire District 1 Spokesperson Leslie) Hynes said.

Generally if a fire reignites, it will happen within 12 hours. Property owners are told to watch the building and call 911 immediately if they see smoke or flames.

Investigators wrapped up their on-scene investigation Tuesday and turned the property over to the owners, Hynes said. A contractor boarded up the burned-out units.

It wasn't until late in the afternoon that the roof was finally sealed with a tarp. That could have blocked cooling air and allowed for an ember to reach ignition temperature, Hynes said.'

Does anyone know that the woman did not set herself on fire? It is the punishment doled out by men for any host of reasons, her family did not pay all of her dowry, or an additional dowry, maybe he thought she was being unfaithful, even if she was so much talking to a cashier at the store, maybe he wanted a new wife. This is not uncommon from that country... that being said I watched alot of middle eastern women, Indian women, & african women get beat & when they'd finally get brave enough to call Snohomish County Deputies, they would take the side of the husband. One guy drug his wife outside with a gas can in his hand & punched her in the face repeatedly, even after I said I would testify the deputies said that he told them that she had hit herself!

Perhaps you guys at KING 5 can explain why on tonight's 10pm channel 6 news you said that the latte bandit in Marysville was a Hispanic but at the 11pm news you people didn't say he was Hispanic.

One of the two border police officers, both Hispanic, now unlawfully imprisoned for defending this country was beaten in Prison and not a word from you people.

Me detects censorship and favoring of illegal aliens, illegal alien criminals and the fact that our country is under assault by Latinos and we are seeing more and more local crimes being committed by Latinos that you people refuse to report for some reason.

You people need to stop the censorship and bias towards your little friends from the South. With increasing crimes by illegal aliens and the growing anger by Americans against their illegal hugging Government officials and the bias censorship of national leftist controled media, you are feeding fuel to a potential nation wide explosion.
