November 2006Riding shotgun in "StormKING" was a ton of fun...and really frustrating! We get a lot of e-mails and phone calls from consumers complaining about contractors failing to live up to their promises. We decided to look into LaVern Poston, and the company he represents, Northwest Decks and Sunrooms, because the complaints against him were so egregious. Poston would visit potential clients and give them a written bid asking for a large amount of money before little, if any, work was done ($14,000 to $21,000 in the cas... Our investigation focused on how those who've lived and worked at Family Resources feel the director, Dr. Florence Greff, PhD., controls and bullies the clients in her care. The program is designed for adults with serious mental problems, combined with drug addiction. This is a truly vulnerable population. What we didn't ha...
I've worked on real estate stories and mortgage schemes before, but this is the first time I've come across what I now know is called "affinity fraud" or "affinity group fraud." These are schemes based on trust between the perpetrator and victim where the two share something important. Two common areas are shared religions and nationalities. Liza Bautista used them both. I mentioned in the story that Bautista is a leader in her ch...
We received the tip about the wheelchair lifts from a concerned parent at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle. He was upset that some of the disabled parents couldn't watch football games from the stands because the lifts were not working. We checked it out and found it was true. We also discovered that other stadiums had lifts that did not work. We inspected Seattle Schools maintenance records, state permit information and data from t... I have covered four Olympics now for KING5 News. Sydney, Salt Lake, Athens and Torino. And I just love the work. I am a sucker for the grandeur and the craziness of the event, the high-minded competition as well as the petty bickering and cheating and skullduggery that always goes on. It is great theater on a grand international stage. The International Olympic Committee picks the sports for the games. Badminton, Team Handball,... Who hasn't gotten angry when they can't find parking, yet they see junk carks being stored on city streets? This summer the KING 5 Investigators started getting complaints about dozens of junk cars showing up in one Seattle neighborhood. Whenever neighbors would complain, Seattle Parking Enforcement would come out and slap on warn... Millions of dollars, thousands of TV commercials and countless handshakes have come down to tonight. As the results start coming in, what are your reactions? This is your chance to give us a piece of your mind, and we'll select some of your comments to read on our KING5.com live election webcast, hosted by Carolyn Douglas. Leave your comments below, and as always, please keep it civil... Anyone else glad to take a break from political ads for a while? I voted this morning at a most crowded polling place. Good sign. But I found the ballot pretty full, especially for those of us who don't walk daily on that road to city charter amendments, local courts, etc., so hats off if you voted. New thing: Join Dennis and me and the whole KING 5 team not just on KING and KONG TV tonight, but on KING5.com for our first elect...
Sex offenders have found a place where they can live in obscurity. They can walk the halls, share a room, eat a meal, and talk to their neighbor's visiting grandchildren without anyone ever knowing of their criminal past. Where is this place that registered sex offenders can bypass the laws of community notification, which require that neighborhoods be notified when a Level II or Level III sex offender move in? I'm sorry to say it's the >> Continue reading: Sex offenders, felons living in obscurity among the most vulnerable Like most stories, this investigation began with a viewer tip. Someone wrote us saying they had problems with Reality Homes. Their story was troubling. It began with many failed framing inspections and lengthy delays. However, the owners lost their case to Reality in arbitration. We decide... I ended a trip to India at Sea Tac recently. India had outbreaks of two potentially deadly mosquito borne diseases: malaria and dengue fever. And I wondered as I looked at the hundreds of other tourists waiting at baggage claim, what we travelers could have brought home besides the usual souvenirs. Suddenly I got a different perspective on global health. I'm curious, what do you think of when you hear the term global health? ... |
