I am with my family on vacation back to my birthplace in South Korea. My uncle called us with the news of North Korea's bomb detonation as we were walking through a Korean folk village just outside of Seoul. Needless to say, it was quite unsettling news. The few South Koreans we've talked to while visiting a small fishing village on the northeastern coast believe the North Korean president is "crazy," but also say they are not scared. Now back in Seoul, we have yet to witness any of the fiery anti-North Korean protests making headlines around the world, just life proceeding as usual in the busy South Korean capital. 2 Comments |
When I was stationed in Japan in the 1980's I always wondered about the mental stability of the South Koreans. They protest the country that saved them from Kim Il Sung in the 1950's, they protest Kim Jong Ill, they'll firebomb police over something as silly as rising rice prices or generous union wage increases, all the while some ten thousand artillary tubes are pointed at their heads from their fruity bretheren to the North.
But I never doubted the ROK Marines or their zelotry to defend every rock and blade of grass in the South against Kim, they are by far the most elite fighting force in North Asia.
Problem is, every Korean under 30 is spoiled and privilaged, not knowing the destruction and desivation of their fathers and mothers the last time Kim came calling with his army. The oldest ones still understand the great threat.
Going to Seoul would be fun.
