Getting inside your head

Paul Allen’s Institute for Brain Science in Seattle announced today it has mapped the brain. The mouse brain, that is. And though it's smaller, it's applicable to us, because humans and mice share about 99% of their genes. The relevance: the recently completed mapping of the human genome tells us what genes are in our body.

This project tells us where in the brain other cells are switched on. The map is now available online free to eve...

Thinking about 9/11, again

The anniversary of 9/11 is Monday. Where were you when you found out the planes hit the towers? Not surprisingly for a TV person, I was watching NBC's Today Show when Matt and Katie shared the horror and talked us through it. I wondered if I could have done as well. And I had to try later that same day.

How Many Dead Iraqi Civilians?

"10,000 iraqi civilains have been killed since May".
It's the kind of number, the kind of statement that catches your attention, that tells a stunning story almost by itself. Iraq is a bloodbath, it says, Iraq is out of control, Iraq is the new killing field.. I heard it first in a story we ran during our Saturday 5:00 newcast. I heard it again in our 6:30 newscast. And the second time it just didn't seem right.
