Lavender in support of a cure

4:35 PM Thu, Aug 31, 2006 |

lavender.jpgI love summer. This one may be the best ever...sun...family time...time in the garden.

In fact, the only good thing about this summer drawing to a close, is what's coming from the garden.

Lavender. Lots of it.

So much of it in fact that as I picked, and thought abou...

Driest summer on record

6:22 PM Mon, Aug 21, 2006 |

Confirming what you probably suspected -- this is the driest summer on record-so far! Our KING 5 Weather department checked National Weather Service statistics, and found that from the solstice to present, SEATAC airport has recorded only 0.07" of rain. That puts this summer firmly in first place. Second place belongs to 1951, which recorded 0.31" over the same period, and third place to 1960 with 0.38". Longtime residents may recall 1967 as ...

An inspirational triathlon

4:23 PM Mon, Aug 21, 2006 |

Our Healthlink team -- Joan Kinsey, Pat Duggan and I -- did the Danskin Triathlon this weekend. Aside from the tremendous spirit of a record 5,000 women participating, the remarkable thing is that 400 of them are cancer survivors. Truly inspirational for all. The survivors we talked to said they did it because if they can overcome the ravages of cancer, they can easily learn to swim or do a triathlon. And others said they do it "because they...

Iraq: Campaign 2006

4:23 PM Mon, Aug 21, 2006 |

Polls show Iraq to be an unpopular war. But President Bush vowed to stay the course close to a half-dozen times in a one-hour news conference Monday.

By now of course, Iraq no longer stands alone, but is a link in the Middle East chain that leads to Tehran and Iran's plans to "go nuclear". The question for voters may boil down to this: Would a U.S. pullout from Iraq start a "domino effect" that leads to Iran Shi'ite-backed Hezbollah re...

Hey, that's the suspect!

4:52 PM Fri, Aug 18, 2006 |

Imagine my surprise when, several minutes after police cleared a major crime scene in Everett, I see a man matching the suspect's description running past our live location.

Moments later I was running after him while I spoke with Everett 911 dispatchers, my photographer Ron Sanford close behind.

This man is accused of striking two officers with his vehicle while fleeing a scene earlier that day. For hours, heavily-armed polic...

The speech of a lifetime

5:59 PM Thu, Aug 17, 2006 |

Tall, blond and handsome. Highly articulate with extensive acting experience. The football talent to be a star on the field and the acting talent to get the lead role in his school play.

But he also had the extremely bad luck of contracting Ewing's Sarcoma, a ravaging bone cancer. Though it couldn’t keep him from standing up at graduation and making the speech of a lifetime. It has, since that speech, sidelined him to a wheelchair....

What is news?

8:47 PM Wed, Aug 16, 2006 |

We received a thoughtful e-mail the other day from a woman who was wondering how we define news. Her comment was (and I'm paraphrasing) that the news was usually sad, bad and tragic. Any positive item or story that leaves you with a smile on your face is reserved for the back end of the newscast.

The woman's challenge to us is this (and this is a direct quote): "News must be a balance between those excellent things people do to build...

Kids with cancer

4:18 PM Mon, Aug 07, 2006 |

I don’t know where to start, with the kids, who have potentially fatal cancer, who keep their parents' hopes alive because these kids have such courage and strength.

Or with the doctors. I don't like to use the term miracle, but really, that's what they seem to me. The doctors, like Jim Olson, who can paint cancer cells with infrared light so they stand out and can more easily be cut out....
