Historic aircraft over western Washington

5:58 PM Thu, Jul 13, 2006 |

This video is a compilation of three separate days of flying during the month of June 2006.

Photographer Don Metcalf with Pilot Mark Hansen were able to capture the images during varied assignments. Ultimately intended for Reporter Glen Farley and Photographer Ken Jones' story of the historic aircraft, where they were able to ride along during their profile.

p51.jpgThe P-51D "Mustang" flew out of Olympia Regional Airport with Bud Granley of Bellevue at the controls. Bud came from a flying family, served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and had a career at United Airlines. This particular plane is owned by the Olympic Flight Museum in Olympia, Wash.

The Mustang design began its life in the U.S. Air Force which ordered 2,200 P-51B's. The aircraft was equipped with six Browning 50-caliber machine guns.

This B-24 "Liberator" is the only restored flying aircraft of this type in the world. This particular model is a B-24J and is owned by the Collings Foundation of Stow, Maine.

The Collings Foundation lists its mission and purpose as dedicating itself to preserving and displaying the machines that helped build the world and helped keep it free.

They sponsor the Wings of Freedom Tour which travels the U.S. every year and most recently came through the Northwest.

Also on tour, the Collings Foundation B-17G "Flying Fortress" the most modern aircraft of its time. Built in Seattle by the Boeing Company between 1935 and 1945, it's one of nearly 13,000 that was manufactured for the war effort.

Flight enthusiasts marvel at seeing these old aircraft up close, this is a rare opportunity to see these flying machines actually still flying, thanks to the aid of SkyKING.

That is some of the best video of vintage aircraft I have ever seen. Great views, great angles. Loved it.

I agree, some of the best footage I've ever seen. SkyKING has some great hardware onboard! The 40's music was a great touch. The owners of the aircraft would probably love a DVD of the clip, too!

Thank you...

Excellent! I liked this footage so much, I emailed a link to my family back east. Keep up the good work!

The footage you have is excellent, I had the opportunity to fly on the B-17, "Nine-O-Nine" while it was at the Tacoma Narrows airport. I have to rate it as one of the best experiences I have ever had. I've admired these aircraft and especially the Men who flew them as long as I can remember. It was an honor to fly in one of their aircraft and to have the opportunity to speak with some of the Men who flew them. Thanks for the video.

The video was awesome. Few words can descibe it, when one appreciates vintage aircraft of that era.

Hi Bill, Thanks Bill for your time putting together a great video. Have watched it a number of times. You no doubt didn't have time to get some photos. Thanks again for all the ones you have gotten that Mark has forwarded to me. Cal
