Behind the scenes covering the Seattle shooting Bookmark and Share

8:16 PM Fri, Jul 28, 2006 |

When the police scanner crackled with a report of shots fired inside the Jewish Federation of Seattle, we knew it had the potential to become one of those few Seattle stories that captures the attention of the country. In this unfortunate case, it did. The KING 5 newsroom quickly dispatched crews to the scene and broke into programming. What follows are some behind-the-scenes photos...

News director Pat Costello and executive producer Norm Ohashi consult with assistant news director Laura Newborn and anchor Lori Matsukawa.

Anchor Dennis Bounds, just off the set after covering the story all evening, talks with 10 p.m. producer Tom Lawnsby and 11 p.m. producer Su Ring.

Planning manager Ed White maps out the location and assignments of the reporters and photographers.

Pat Costello, "Capcom" coordinator Tod Brueske and assignment editor Kate Anderson discuss plans to cover an upcoming press conference live.

I am overwhelmed with sadness at today's news from Seattle. As a former Seattleite, now living in Nahariya, Israel, and a former employee of the Jewish Transcript and Jewish Federation there, I am devastated to see that the war I am living through here is suddenly viseral to my friends in Seattle. I pray for the injured and for the Jewish Community there.

Granted this is a sad situation, but the news media missed the point. Instead of focusing on the security of the Jewish community, they should be investigating the Muslim community. Why have there been no reports from the Muslim churches condemning this act of violence? Where did the shooter attend school, and which mosque did he frequent. More importantly, what messages are the Muslim clerics teaching or preaching? If we want to protect the right of all people, we don't need stronger doors, we need to find out if these so called religious clerics are preaching HATE or PEACE. Only then, will people feel safe. Investigate the root of the problem not a band aid fix of more security.

Judy I totally agree. The senseless murder of innocent people has got to stop. As a Christian, I am appalled at killing just because of your faith. The The extremist Muslim is weaned on mothers milk to hate both Americans and Jews...The religious teachings of the Muslum community need to be addressed. If in fact the person who murdered this innocent woman is from a local Mosque, then the other members of the Mosque need to be under very close scrutiny!

I think that all religious groups should be treated with the same amount of contempt as Christinity is. Christinity has taken a lot of negative press over the last several years while the muslim faith is treated with kitten gloves. It's bizzarre that one group kills out of sheer hate and the other doesn't. The group that is killing out of hate is the one getting treated with kitten gloves.

I'm for religious freedom that the US Constitution provides.

Hate is hate no matter where it comes from. As a Christian I have to correct Heidi. There are extremist Christians (lest we forget the Crusades and the Inquisition), just as there are extremists in every religion. Unfortunately, the act of one falls on everyone in that group. Where is everyone when the KKK is marching down main street? They are supposedly professed Christians. Needless to say, this guy was a nut case and needs to be taken care of accordingly, muslim or not. Don't blame the whole race or religion because of the one idiot extremist or even the few or many.

Covering? Oh you mean covering up for Islamo-fascism KING 5 gee why isn't that a surprise?

Last week we had Lebanese fascists in Deerborne Michigan screaming death to Israel and America and you didn't cover it...

A week before this Islamo-fascist shot up the Jewish federation a Paki-nazi killed a jewish man in Rhode Island screaming hate for Israel...

We had this latest islamo-fascist threat in London but your parent network is doing everything it can to protect the rug humping fascists...

Your coverage of the war in Iraq and the nazi fascism of Lebanon is always against the Jews...

So when will you all finally wear the nazi Hakenkrutz on your arms?

You obviously do NOT know your history, or you have recieved your information on the crusades through some song on an cd you have laying around the house.

Islam started and won the crusades. ANY movement made by christians was a defensive move. You can try to make people feel as simple and as guilty as you think they are, but it is you who is the grand fool of all.
