Two straight days of record heat: one day of 90 degree weather at SeaTac; two or even three days of 90 degree plus heat at some inland locations. We know it can get hot in the Puget Sound area, but 90 degree heat is uncommon. Last summer, the mercury never rose to 90 at Seatac, and records supplied by the National Weather Service show that since 1950, there have been fourteen summers in which we've never reached 90. That means, on average, one out of four summers never sees 90 at SeaTac... Officially, Monday's high was 90 at SeaTac, breaking the old record of 88, and Sunday's high was 88, eclipsing the old record of 87. Now residents of other areas wonder what the fuss is about when we hit 90 -- other cities routinely exceed 90 -- and with far higher humidity! The difference is because it doesn't happen often here, we're not used to it. In contrast, 3 days of rain scarcely raises an eyebrow here, while residents of other areas would be wringing their hands. Some, of course, suffer from heat more than others. This isn't anything to take lightly. Extreme heat kills more people in the U.S. than any other weather related cause. The elderly, disabled and the very young are much more susceptible to heat -- so check in on them, make sure they're drinking plenty of liquids and try to get them into cooler places. Cities are often the warmest places, because of all the pavement and rooftops. Solar energy absorbed by such things can result in local temperatures 50-70 degrees warmer than the surrounding air temperatures. That means an air temperature of 90 degrees could translate to 140 degrees or more on a road! 15 Comments |
I moved here from Wichita several years ago and this is great weather. Bring it on. Wichita gets over 100 for days and days in a row, enjoy what you have
I have always wondered why people complain about the weather...hot, snow, wind and rain. Mother Nature does what she wants when she wants. Don't people understand that humans cannot control the weather? Or is it because some people aren't happy unless they are complaining. For me...I enjoy all 4 seasons. Winter for snowmobiling, spring for the beautiful green of new growth, summer for swimming and anything outdoors and autumn for the turning of the leaves. Let Mother Nature do it all....I am here to enjoy each season!!
I can not understand why people complain about the rain and the minute it stops and the sun comes out, they complain about the heat. I love the hot sunny weather and am not real crazy about rain but I'm not going to waste my time complaining about it. I complain about the complainers! As one other person wrote "You can't change Mother Nature". Enjoy it while you can and take it as a blessing!
I love it, I am from CA so this is my type of weather. Stop whining, other places in the US have 35 days or more of 90+ degrees during the summer. As far as I am concern, I would have no problem with a drought, allow me to enjoy my hobbies outside.
It's all a matter of perspective...I live in Austin, TX...it will be 95 degrees or hotter...every day... until October!!! Plus, the lows usually hover around the mid seventies...if we're lucky. So take it from me...you have no idea what hot is...thank your lucky stars you only have a few days of "hot" weather up there.
People who complain about the weather just don't have enough to do or think about.
Wow, all these shallow people complaining about people who complain about the weather. Talking about the weather has always been part of casual conversation. Dig a little deeper and you can find something more substantial to complain about if you must complain.

Let me start by saying that I am from Texas and now live in Seattle. One of the reasons I moved here is to escape the summer of 100+ degrees. I see nothing wrong with people express their feelings about the weather. Be it because they think it too hot, too cold, too rainy, too snowy, whatever. I have to say that when the temperatures rise above 85, I have a hard time functioning. It was the same when I lived in Texas. (Which by the way, I lived there for 24 1/2 years.) Maybe these people who you say "complain" about the weather have a reason to complain.
I guess it gets alot warmer up here on Camano Island where I live than it does in Sea-Tac. The past several summers we've had close to 100 degree heat for days in a row. I love it, I'm always glad for any sunshine that we get, be it summer or winter. And yes, it does seem to be a "thing" in this region to complain about whatever weather we have going on.
I don't get it. I grew up here and left as soon as I could because of the rain. Now I'm back and thinking about leaving again. 90 is a wonderful temp. If this is globel warming, I'm for it!!
I have lived in the King county area for close to 45 yrs. I don't know how many homesteaders are out there, but for those of us that have been around for awhile, the change is noticed. You talk about the 90 degree heat record breaker. Well is it any wonder why things are changing climatically? In the 60's the tallest building in Seattle was the Smith Tower. Through the 70's our legislators where smart enough to attempt to pass and enforce what was called the "cap initiative" limiting growth in Seattle. Now that urban spraw has infected the rest King County like a cancer. When concrete, gas guzzling Hummers and SUV's, condo's, apartments, and rediculously large houses (with over inflated prices. I had to throw that one in.) take over instead of trees and other natural growth; thats what happens. HEAT ! Ask those who lived in LA in the 40's and 50's what the weather was like before and after their large building boom. So all those who like to complain about how hot it is, get over it. Nothing is going to change till our government leaders realise how the urban developers are raping and destroying the local enviroment for their own person gain.
Jeff,
I was disappointed when I watched King 5 News Weather tonight. The only high temps mentioned were in the 90's. Doesn't anyone monitor the schoolnet weather stations? Yesterday I looked at Schoolnet on line and in Pe Ell it was 104 degrees. I just looked at it for today and it said that it was 101 degrees in Pe Ell. Doesn't Pe Ell rate a mention?
Sincerely,
Donna Thompson
My husband always says that there are people who, (if winning a million dollars) would complain that it was given to them in one dollar bills. Like Susan Emerson, I have heard people complain about the rain and the minute we have a few hot days, they complain about that. Why complain about something you cannot control? Get an air conditioner or a couple of fans...Good grief...it's not going to last that long anyway!
wish it was like the old days - here in the PNW, for those that remember it, when it was simply cooler, mostly overcast, rainy, snowed every winter and was FAR LESS CROWDED.
