June 2006We're used to little miracles performed every day at Seattle Children's Hospital. But for this story, there's no precedent. A little baby boy would be perhaps the youngest ever in the country to have a heart transplant... at the moment of birth! The mother's delivery by C-section is put off until the right donor heart is available. The call comes. The heart arrives by jet from Arizona packed in its tiny container filled with ice. It... Two straight days of record heat: one day of 90 degree weather at SeaTac; two or even three days of 90 degree plus heat at some inland locations. We know it can get hot in the Puget Sound area, but 90 degree heat is uncommon. Last summer, the mercury never rose to 90 at Seatac, and records supplied by the National Weather Service show that since 1950, there have been fourteen summers in which we've never reached 90. That means, on average, one... It's not a question I ask myself much. What would Warren Buffett do? But it came to mind recently after seeing an image of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell's head on top of a vulture's body. Bear with me. The image of Cantwell is courtesy of an ad by the Washington, D.C.-based Free Enterprise Fund -- running through Tuesday during KING 5 News shows -- attacking the estate tax... ...Sometimes when we're looking for elements of a news story, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Thursday, we found the needle, but had a difficult time trying to figure out how to take it out of the haystack and present it to viewers. The way we did it, would have been unthinkable, even a few years ago... ...Did Seattle become the United Nations headquarters? The Danish, Chinese and Mexican Leaders have all visited Seattle in recent weeks, and this Friday, President Bush comes to town. What does it mean, in your opinion, for our elected leaders...? ...I am 52 years old, but I like to think of myself as a young 52. I am surrounded by young journalists who teach me what’s cool and what’s not. I take some measure of pride in not only knowing who “Death Cab For Cutie” is, but also enjoying their music. Now comes this ring tone kids are using to fool their teachers. It’s at su... It was dinner last night. Two Army officers were at my table talking about a fellow soldier who was about to defy orders by refusing to deploy to Iraq. Both of my neighbors, especially the one who is also set to deploy later this month, seemed to feel betrayed. As we digested our meals and found ourselves engaged in candid conversation, a soft spoken yet resolute commander told me, “He can disagree all he wants, but he better do ... The year was 1902, and Southwest Washington burned, big time. Nearly 240,000 acres of Western Washington forest went up in flames, dozens died and many more became homeless. Yes, twice now I've mentioned the "west" word. Wildfires are not just an Eastern Washington problem. Catastrophic wildfires have burned on the "wet side" of the state, and while the biggest, the Yacolt Burn is far from the only major blaze between the Pacific coast ... U.S. Army 1st. Lt. Ehren Watada based at Fort Lewis refuses to be deployed to Iraq. He could be court martialed. Penalties range from a dishonorable discharge to 2 years behind bars for refusing a deployment order and up to 5 years for trying to evade service in a combat zone. Yet, the order he chose to obey was the one barring him fr... On the first day of June, it might seem that May has been unseasonably wet and cool. It might seem that way, but not really. We've had 1.56" of rain at SeaTac for the month of May, which is below the average of 1.73". Average temperatures for the month have run a little above normal. Remember that stretch of 80 degree+ temperatures two weeks ago? That was the culprit. That probably seemed impossibly remote this past weekend. I know it did to m... |
