Moms all across the country were pampered, wined and dined Sunday for Mother's Day. I spent time with my mom Friday and Saturday because Sunday is a work day for me. Fortunately my assignment was to drive to Whidbey Island and meet Mary Geist who had been named Mom of the Year. Eleven children would make most people stop and wonder, why does she do it? Then when you see just who these children are you can't even begin to understand where she gets her energy and drive. Mary Geist had already raised two boys that are grown adults now. She said she felt alone and longed for the chance to have a baby to love again. She really understated that: She has since adopted 10 children, all of them special needs kids. Her eleventh is a foster child considered un-adoptable but I have a feeling she'll find a way. To see her wrangle all of these kids during our visit to their favorite beach on Whidbey was something to behold. She seems to know where every kid is at every moment and if that child has some need or desire she addresses it. All of this is done with great compassion and love that you only need to be around for a little while to see. These kids come from many different backgrounds, shown on reporter Eric Wilkinson's story. Where they came from is their past - Mary seems to mostly concern herself with where they are going. She keeps in touch with birth parents and says that those individuals are an important part of this unique family. A beautiful day at the beach on Whidbey Island is a great way to spend a Mother's Day. Just a few hours with Mary Geist and her family made that day even more special. She really walks the walk. |
