Counting U.S. casualties in Iraq

4:36 PM Fri, May 19, 2006 |

I'm often asked, why the casualty count? Since the U.S. led the invasion of Iraq 38 months ago, I often include in my KING5 News reports a graphic stating the number of American dead and wounded. Some viewers don't like it. They claim that "keeping score" is inflammatory and "anti-Bush."

Some viewers question my sources. Most nights, it is DefenseLink.mil - the Pentagon website which I find to be the most conservative - not out of a desire to "hide" US casualties, but because of the DoD's strict confirmation and notification protocol which can take time.

The positive feedback I get does not center on "It's Bush's fault!" Instead, many KING 5 viewers agree it is useful to keep in mind the dimension of the ultimate sacrifice made by our volunteer armed forces. To my mind, this is something apart from whether you agree with the administration's policy. But what do you think?

Thank you for keeping a casualty count in your reports. Thank you for honoring the soldiers by keeping them in everyone's minds. It is not anti Bush. The people who object just don't want to be reminded that there are still soldiers dying over there. They want to get back to their little lives only caring about themselves. Well, too bad!!! If you don't want to hear about it then get Bush to pull the soldiers out.

Robert A. Egerer said:

How utterly dishonest can you get? If You are so concerned and caring about American lives why arn't you giving a casualty count of the U.S. traffic deaths, you could even do a side by side comparison but of course that wouldn't advance your agenda would it?

Bret Sutton said:

Mr. Egerer, you disagree with Mr. Porter. So he has an agenda? You want him to compare war deaths with traffic deaths. Should he also include domestic violence deaths, cancer deaths, and suicides? Those are all very newsworthy topics, but they are not the topic under discussion. Many organizations across the country have programs in place to minimize those deaths. Let us, as a nation, get a program in place to minimize the deaths in Iraq.

I appreciate your counting the deaths, for it reminds us again of the parallels that this war has with the Vietnam War. In that war, one in which capturing territory had little meaning, US policymakers decided that counting deaths was the best way to measure American success. Yet what the counts revealed was that we had found ourselves in a killing contest with an enemy that didn't place the same value on human lives that we say we do. The situation in Iraq is eerily familiar. Your counts help make us aware of the human costs of war, and should force us to ask if the United States is pursuing a well-defined goal that merits the expenditure of human lives.

The casualty count may be an important aspect of the war news, but why not put it in perspective? why not compare it to the casualty count ( on a similiar timeline) of previous wars?

I think the bias lies not in what you're saying by reporting the casualties, but rather what you're not saying.

It's all about perspective.

I don't necessarily agree with stating what the casuality count is. But I can see the need for doing that once in a while.

My problems is that most of use don't hear the stories about the good our military is doing over in Iraq. Such as clean water, consistant power etc. All we get over here is the problems that the military has encountered. The suicide bombs etc.

I know having these kinds of stories would not be something that would be popular but they would help explain a little bit more about what we are doing over in Iraq. When will the press cover all aspects of this issue? Not just the bad side but the good as well.

I say go ahead and keep score.

I want to know how many soldiers took one for the team.(Go team go). I just wish we had a counter for the insurgents and civilians as well, then it would really be like keeping score.. There might be a slight difference in numbers between the three, but I am sure the US soldiers count would be drastically less.

Plus we need to let the fatality count be public for our future soldiers, when they realize that only a couple thousend die out of hundreds of thousands, then they will feel better about going over there, and fighting for the team.

What the hell ever made any of you think that Americans or anyone else can fight a war and not have casualties??? What a bunch of idiots!!! Do any of you have any idea where we would be facing the terrorists if we were not in Iraq? Right here on our own ground. And every one of our AMERICAN SOLDIERS knows that. That is why so many of them want to VOLUNTEER to return there after serving there once already.

All of you sound like a bunch of spoiled little brats rather than patriotic AMERICANS and you all make me sick to my stomach. Oh my God - Bush is spying on 300 million citizens. Oh my God - there were no WMD's.(You should thank God for that rather than bitch about it) Oh my God - were spending money to fund this war. (We were spending it on military already anyway - Iraq or not)

When did we turn from proud, tough Americans to being a bunch of whining, sniveling little bunch of babies, anyway???

If there's no agenda and we just want to "remind ourselves of the sacrifices of our troops", then how come military training deaths have never figured in the media before? I can think of innumerable training accidents that resulted in the deaths of soldiers that have never made a ripple in the media if there was no local angle or impressive photograph. You never cared before, so don't try to tell me you do now.

I agree that the news channels FAIL miserably in reporting the wonderful, positive things our HERO's have given the Iraqi people that have vastly improved their lives.
ya, ok, many have died in making that sacrifice, but -if you really want to honor those that died- give EQUAL attention (air time) to what those fallen DID before they died!

maybe King5 can be a trend setter and
GO POSITIVE!

Happy Memorial Day Guys

NBC has an anti-Bush agenda that filters right on down to King 5 news. If you must, once a week reporting on the death and injuries in Iraq would be fine thank you.

I agree that reporting the good that our troops have done is a wonderful idea. The only problem is, is that Americans would rather live on crap than sweetness. (Watch any bio movie of a famous person. All they ever show is the crap in that persons life and none of the good stuff.) That's the agenda of the public. They are all still stuck in the 60's with that "Make love not war" agenda that they just can't let go of. They make judgemental decisions about the world around them without giving an open minded thought to the outcome of always hiding from the world.

How about you keep track of all the dead from Islamo-geo-fascism since the 1972 Munich Massacre to be fair Don? Your nightly count is so b**** s***t, do you think the Islamo-fascists will stop because of your efforts to see we fail?

All of you media people are traitors. You were treasonous in Vietnam, You were treasonous during the Cold War and you haven't changed a damn bit.

I see King 5 has joined the orgazmic spasm of glorifying the dead count again.

2500 DEAD!! YAH! YIPPIE!!

There were 2500 dead in a single battle in World War II. The Island of Iwo Jima.

There were 48 thousand dead. At Gettysburg in 1863! 48 Thousand! Can you imagine the open span between Cemetary Ridge and Seminary Ridge covered not in one or ten bodies but in a sea of thousands of slaughtered men?

7 thousand were killed at Cold Harbor in 1864.

The 54th Massachusetts Infantry lost 60 percent of its numbers at Fort Wagner.

Numbers are bull shit! If Abe Lincoln had listened to the crybabies complaining about how many Union troops died in the latest battle, black people would still be saying "Massah" in some Southern Democrats Plantation.

The number count is an ankle pin to the America hating left and their fellow cushion buddies in the media. You hope that by displaying this crap every night on the evening news you can chip another chunk of rock away from the United States. You people suck. The military should turn their backs on all of you and leave you too rot.

Bush should be praised over the low number of casualties. Don't think so? Look at the number of casualties in Vietnam, Korea, or WW2. For example, in the South Pacific during WW2 over 2000 marines lost their lives invading the island of Tarwa. How about Normandy, the Tet offensive, pork chop, and hamburger hill. The casulaties are incredibly low as compared to past historical battles. Stop bitching and blaming Bush! Thank God for our technological, intellectual, and military might that keeps the war on terror in the mideast and not in the streets of Seattle and New York. It just never surprises one to hear how people spend more time complaining about the price of gas and the economy, than the real things that matter. That being freedom and democracy, which Osama Bin Ladin has openly declared an unofficial world war against called "Jihad." These young men and women should be praised for the ultimate sacrifice they have made for the rest of us.
