Nothing will ever lessen the pain experienced by those who lost their loved ones to Kyle Huff's deadly rampage in Seattle. But the discovery of a suicide note offers some insight into the mind of the murderer. And that is important to the friends of relatives who lose a loved one to sudden violence for no apparent reason. After the crime tape has been cleared away and the search warrants served, they remain haunted by the question, "Why?" I remember when a gunman walked into a shipyard on Seattle's Lake Union in 1999 and went on a similar shooting rampage. Was it a random act? Was it someone angry at the family who owned the shipyard? For two months, the questions went unanswered and a community lived in fear. Later it was learned the killer, Kevin Cruz, was a former employee who became outraged over a disability claim. Talking to the victims' families during the Cruz trial, I was struck by how those left behind grope for any shred of explanation. It doesn't bring closure, but it helps. We still don't know everything in Kyle Huff's mind. We don't know why he hated raves. But we know more than we did two months ago, when Seattle woke up to one of the worst mass murders in the city's history. 17 Comments |
Contempt is a fine motive.
Thanks at least I feel like I know something, and that what I feared as a motive was right.
Although the suicide note attaches a motive to the horrendous attack, it also makes it clear that this was a hate crime. From the quotes provided, the gross stereotypes about dance culture seem to parallel other erroneous beliefs about other marginalized communities. For a group as accepting, diverse, and tolerant as those victimized, saying Kyle Huff's motive is shocking is an understatment.
Other news media note the suspicious circumstances under which the note was discovered, and that it is still being examined for authenticity.
May I suggest that we all reserve comment until we know whether the note is authentic?
From Linda's piece:
"KING 5 was told that police has verified Kyle Huff’s handwriting and that it was meant to be found after he had completed his gruesome task."
After watching the other stations it's obvious that they don't have the inside sources that Linda has.
Great report.
The Seattle PI (and the Police) seem less certain about the authenticity of the letter. Its discovery a mile from the Huffs' apartment surely raises suspicions.
"Saturday, May 20, 2006. Police try to authenticate letter
Note to Capitol Hill killer's twin discovered
By HECTOR CASTRO, P-I REPORTER
It was found more than a mile from where he lived, a month after he died, and in a trash bin.
So police are still trying to determine whether the letter purportedly written by Capitol Hill killer Kyle Huff is genuine.
"We have to ensure that it's not a hoax, leading us down the wrong path," Seattle police Sgt. Deanna Nollette said Friday, a day after word first leaked of the discovery.
Test results could come in the next few weeks, before the completion of a report on the murders by a panel of experts.
............
If does prove to be genuine, Nollette said, the discovery would be remarkable. "It would be the equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack," she said"
I find the circumstances surrounding this extremely suspicious. It SCREAMS "sick sick prank"
Found a mile from his home? A month after the incident? Dumpsters get emptied once a week, so whoever put it there did so within days of it's being found.
Who? and Why?
The handwriting has NOT been authenticated. I have that on authority much better than KING 5 news.
Think for yourselves people. Just because someone says it on TV doesn't necessarily make it true.
To not suggest in the story that the circumstances were very odd, that it could be a hoax, and that the handwriting, in fact, had not been authenticated is just plain irresponsible- yellow journalism at it's worst. I can get that sort of thing in "The Weekly World News" or "The New York Post".
It feels like this story was put together with very little research and with more concern about "getting the scoop" then with making sure the story was accurate. Very amatuerish, very irresponsible... very "High School Newspaper" journalism style.
What I wonder is if KING 5 will have the guts to step up with an on-air correction if (um, when) it turns out they were wrong?
Wow, Elizabeth... Way to rip on journalism... Just out of curiosity, who is this higher authority that you are speaking of? Oh, and, I watched other reports, and they were way different from KING 5; I personally don't know who to believe, I think things are way to preliminary to be deciding, but I find it highly interesting that KING had video of the bomb squad blowing up that item, but komo 4 said that it was an arson team that decided it wasn't a bomb and just took the letter and other "evidence" from the scene - it just inclines me to believe KING in that area of reporting.
Also, I'm all for thinking for yourself, but come on, you don't have to verbally beat the cr@p out of people for talking about it an maybe believing it. And even if King turns out to be wrong, in the long run, they will correct their error if necessary. Lighten up a little, almost all preliminary reports like this are just that: preliminary.
C. Dunn, you need to re-read what I wrote. I gave my opinion on whether I think they will correct their error, I don't think they will. Why? They never have in the past, that's why.
They haven't backed down on one thing in the story, even things that have been demonstrated to be in question, if not outright false.
The other versions of the story, incl in the print media, left room for doubts and questions. KING 5 gave the story like it was gospel truth, a proven fact and not just a theory, even given the highly suspicious circumstance.
THINK! What are the odds of a note like that turning up a month later and a mile away? They are astronomical. You have a better shot at living on Pluto in your lifetime than having something like that happen. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impossible, just unbelieveably unlikely.
A note like that would have been found on the scene by the cops. Or by his brother, who would not have dumped it like that.
Obviously not all the evidence is in yet, that's exactly why KING 5 was over the top in stating everything as proven fact, as in "the handwriting was authenticated", when it definitely hadn't been. There are ways to couch things when you don't know for sure they are true.
Oh, and like anyone else who wants to keep their sources, I don't reveal mine! First rule of journalism. But I do trust them much more than I trust KING 5 news--or any other TV news for that matter. And I guaruntee you, KING 5 won't give you theirs either.
The letter hasn't been authenticated.
You clearly didn't understand what I wrote. It is indeed the mark of sensationalistic journalism to be so eager to be the first on the air with a story that you don't check your facts first, or at least use words like "allegedly" to couch things that are so hard to swallow as a suicide note turning up a month later and a mile away.
Your response sort of proves my point, actually. Because they said it on TV, you don't seem to question it nearly as much as you should be. I don't say that only KING 5 is guilty of sensationalism, but we are talking about this particular story.
They clearly were more concerned with getting the story on the air, no matter how incredible it sounded. When you hear circumstances that odd, you should probably at least use more cautious language and not talk about it as absolutle truth. You are right, it's preliminary and they should have said so.
PS Ripping on journalism is a GOOD thing to do. That's what keeps them honest and working hard.
I didn't say I believed it, I said I don't know what to believe, yeah, it's unlikely, DUH. I totally agree with you there. But there are a lot of things in the world that are highly unlikely and no one believes it and then it's proven true. Like I said: It's preliminary. They're human, too. And humans don't always admit their mistakes and certainly can be accused of liking to take the lime light. I think you're a little too upset about it all. As well as a little passive agressive in regard to your sources comment. It's like "I know their wrong" "how do you know?" "I can't/won't tell you!"
Also, you know -nothing- about me, you have no way to know how serious I was taking the story.
Think whatever you want, but they did cover their butts a little bit, mentioning the committie that will be investgating and releasing information at the end of the month. To me, it doesn't upset me that much - if I don't like a news station or don't trust it: I Don't Watch It. I don't believe half the stuff I see on television, and if anything does catch my eye, I look for validation, I look to see if they are anywhere close, I look to see if I should believe what they say or just let it go.
To me, In the long run, one preliminary news report that is dwarfed by all the successive ones, just doesn't affect the story that much, especially when/if "real" facts or other facts to prove those wrong, surface.
WOW! Talk about passive aggressive!
Okay, I think I told you why I won't reveal my sources... it's for the same reasons journalists do not. Because if I do, they will no longer trust me and no longer give me information. In other words, my sources are too valuable to blow them on some dumb blog!
I don't think you'd question this stance from journalists, as it's taken all the time.. "protecting my source", and with good reason. Believe me, don't believe me... I don't care. Because I KNOW. And when you know something absolutely, you don't need validation from anyone else.
You also don't know me... Maybe I work for the Seattle PD or the Medical Examiner's office, or know someone who does? Did you ever think of that?
You are back pedaling. In your initial post you said they "would retract if they were wrong" as if it is a sure thing. I say I've never seen it before and you now say "well noone likes to admit their mistakes". Which is it then? Do you think they will? Or do you think they won't?
They should have used words like "preliminary" and "alleged" in their report, but they did not on TV, nor did they in the article above. They spoke as gospel truth what clearly isn't and in fact, is more likely NOT correct. I think they should have reported it with the skepticism it so obviously warrants.
And if I seem to be getting too upset, you might consider again, as you have asked me to do, that you don't know me. Maybe I am upset because I knew the victims? Because I've been in the house at parties myself? Because I live less than 2 blocks away?
Guess what? It's all of the above. Perhaps you now see my extra strong desire for responsible reporting in this particular case.
Check and checkmate!
The Kyle Huff note was found at least 30 days after the shootings in a garbage can. WOW! How bad is trash service in lake city once a month???????????????
And by the by has his brother seen this? What am I saying of course he has(eyes rolling). This is another sad coverup attempt by the SPD and it's really not even nessacary. Shows how bad things have gotten under the chief.
