Yes, the Republican Party has shifted to the right. They used to, at least, have an idea of what would work for the business community! Business people know that we need a great educational system and a great transportation system to maintain our economy and our communities. But the Republican Party has consistently endorsed all the Eyman proposals: from Initiative 695, the car tab tax, to I-912, the repeal of the gax tax. What has suffered from the passage of the Eyman proposals: the University of Washington is losing teachers and raising tuition for students, the parks are underfunded and charging for use (it has been $5 parking to take a walk at Sammamish State Park), we have terminal traffic gridlock, the list goes on. Most good business people know that bad mouthing and underfunding agencies, whether they are business or government, does not produce efficient and healthy entities. But this has become the mantra of the Republican Party.

Within the ranks of Republicans it is very well known, although they won't speak it aloud, that candidates all are indebted to the workhorses of the party, namely, the right wingers, who are oftentimes also religious zealots. These people expect payback. Unfortunately, their adherence to their extreme philosophies seems to consistently trump what is best for Washington state and our country.

We are far too attached to party affiliation. How a candidate considers the issues is the only important consideration. The inability of politicians to consider all sides, independently, is the primary problem with partyline politics. I look for candidates who are primarily financially conservative and primarily socially liberal, putting their constituents' needs first while keeping the costs down. Hmm, I must be a sell-out... or a communist... or....

The day our fearless leader announced, "You are either with us or you are against us," my lifelong identification with the Republican party was lost. Far more offensive then the movement to the right, the Republicans appear to be the party of the righteous, with nominal tolerance for anything but their own narrowing viewpoint. The hubris, and apparent utter lack of humility, brings tremendous visceral discomfort and I now wish they would just disappear altogether such that my lunch does not reappear. I celebrate Senator Tom and will look forward to helping him get elected - as a "whatever."

The republican party has not shifted to the right. This is an attempt by the media and some politicians to sway the public into thinking so. With the daily "divided" nation dogma presented in the national media, sticking to your message is considered extreme. As it relates to educational spending by JR it boils down to a simple fact, tossing money at a problem never resolves that problem. Our educational system is a failure. Money won't fix it. Only standardized testing for each and every grade level will. There should be standards that each student must reach before moving to the next level. Teachers should teach those skills to their students. If those same students don't pass the test then they get held back. We are becoming a nation of wimps and whiners who look to government to solve our pansy problems.

Luke Esser has clearly stated his principles since he was a student at the University of Washington (where I was happy to work with him on the -winning- student body presidents campaign). No big changes, just an open mind and willingness to get down and do the hard work that needs doing. His opponent on the other hand is making his changes obvious, some would say making them into a publicity move. So the best thing to do is look at their voting records and decide for yourself.

For those who choose to advocate standardized testing in schools, I would simply like to point out that standardized testing did not exist when our nations educational system was producing the brilliant minds all over this country that helped us become the leaders of the Free World. The answer is not in standardized testing. The answer is in the help and support that students have both in school and AT HOME! In today's busy world of hustle and bustle, kids do not get the support at home that they used to, parents are out of touch with what is happening at their child's school and as a result, the child's education suffers. Republican, Democrat, or independent, my vote will go to the candidate who provides sensible solutions and not just criticism.

It's amazing how quickly some Republicans will try to change the subject when it comes to a discussion about the party shifting to the right. The fact is, the Republican party has been hijacked by fundamentalists who are driving it to the extreme right. The "us or them" stand of the current administration, the "might makes right" philosophy that is driving our current foreign policy, and the drive to infuse our government and judicial system with religious dogma are all indicators of this. Fortunately, we still have an educated populace (although they're trying to wreck that as well) who will not tollerate this ignorant form of governance for long.

In my opinion, ALL candidates should be (all parties) be willing to work for a set wage the first term (starting roughly at about $15.00 per hour) and not be able to make the big money until they have proven themselves worthy. Upon re-election, they would then be eligable for standard politicians wages.

Then you will see how party line they really are when they have to live in the same squaller that the rest of us have to while they are learning about their job. Rather than learning about how rich they can become.

This whole party thing is dividing this country to oblivion. It sucks! And we're the ones who have to pay for their battles all the time.

As long as 40% of the eligible voters fail to participate we will continue to have a congress and administration beholden to the small minority that got them elected. Keep in mind, GW was elected by around 31% of eligible voters of this country. Roughly eighty-one million elibible voters just didn't bother to vote.

WE don't pay attention. While we sit and call each other names like liberals and conservatives, and argue over issues like abortion, guns, and gay rights, our elected representatives are quietly dividing up the wealth of this country amongst themselves and their wealthy friends. Over the last fifty years there has been a significant shift in wealth from the working people to a very small number of very wealthy (5% control 95% of the wealth). OUR healthcare has been handed over to for-profit corporations where obligations to corporate leaders and shareholders are much more important than our well being. Today it is much easier for corporations to just walk away from their pension agreements leaving millions of US without the retirement income we had counted on (while the corporate officers walk away with their millions unscathed). And the list goes on...

It's not them, it's US!

Hey All: Here's another thought, does it matter whether each of the parties are moving too far right or left in the bigger scheme of things? I would just like to see some of these elected professionals move in the direction of acting for their constituents instead of trying to keep their lucrative jobs. Also, how about following ethic rules? And, what ever happened to integrity? If these folks were part of the private work force they would have been fired long ago for unacceptable performance, stealing, malicious pandering, etc. In one respect they are the same, no one understands good basic decency anymore and that is a shame.

I have "the love of God" and I believe that a conservative methodology is the key to continue the wonderful life we enjoy in America. The Republicans have truly lost their conservative philosophy.
