A crown for Kathrina

10:17 AM Tue, Dec 27, 2005 |

I don’t think I have ever met a 4-year-old who has more charisma... more bravery…than the little 4-year-old you will meet Tuesday night if you watch “A Crown for Kathrina,” an hour-long KING 5 HealthLink special. You will witness the more than 12 hour surgery that will attempt to right the wrongs done to Kathrina by a quirk of genetics. Born with a skull too small for her developing brain, a nose too small to give her breath, she also has hearing problems and thus, speech problems, which she works hard to cope with. But cope she does...

Example: I brought her a small stuffed animal which without my knowing was similar to the mixed breed lab she had. When she wanted to kiss me to say thanks, I gave her my cheek. No. she said. And though nearly blind, and only a tot, took my whole face in her tiny hands, turned it to her…and kissed me right where SHE wanted to. She might be severely physically compromised. But she is strong, able and brave, and we want with all our hearts for this effort her family and doctors at Seattle’s Children’s Hospital make to work. Be part of this unfolding miracle. Please join us at 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 27th.

Its hard to type through tears, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed " Crown for Kathrina." What a sweet little girl. I also wanted to commend you, Jean, for the way you talked to her..too many times I see people on television "talk down" to kids using baby talk, and you never once did that. It may be a small thing, but it made the program just that much more enjoyable. What a miracle it is that we have such doctors in our area.
Thank you for bringing us this story. :-)
